Do I need a softer mattress?

Ruth

We've recently bought a Warren Evans mattress to replace a Vispring one we'd had for about years. I'm so disappointed with it. My husband finds it just 'ok' but I am really uncomfortable. I think it's too firm to me. Lying on my back I feel like the arch of my back is unsupported and on my side I get pain in my hip. I am waking several times a night and wake with back pain every morning. The mattress was described as "medium/firm" and has 4000 pocket springs. It's on a solid top divan.
I am 5'2" and 8.5st, my husband is 5'8" and 12st. I wonder if the difference in our weights is why it suits him more than me? Would I be better with a softer mattress? Is there anything that would suit us both without the expense of a custom split tension one?
I have slept wonderfully well on hotel beds in the past but never found anything really comfortable at home. I would be willing to spend more on a really comfortable mattress but I'm worried about spending a fortune and it being no good. Especially after our recent experience. The warren Evans one was £495 reduced from £900 ish.
Thank you.

Hi Ruth,

Thanks for your question.

Every pocket sprung mattress has 2 elements to it; The spring where tension is determined by body weight and then the fillings that sit atop those springs (also known as the comfort layer). It sounds to me like the discomfort is coming from the top layers where you can have that soft, medium or firm upholstery.

At your body weight you would need a Medium spring to get the right support. Your wife is borderline between a Soft and Medium; If she prefers a bit more give then she could choose the Soft. If she prefers a bit more support then she should choose the Medium.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

You can have a split tension one piece mattress in our Artisan range of mattresses. These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses constructed with natural fillings; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper.

We would need to know your sleeping habits as well as preferred feel in the top layers in order to discuss suitability.

In regards to hotel beds, we do compare our Origins Pocket 1500 to the Premier Inn Hypnos mattress but without the pillowtop layer. This mattress has a medium feeling upholstery providing a slight sink in that top layer but not too much. It would feel a bit firmer for your wife than for you due to the weight difference.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
