Chris Hurst

Hi,

I found your online mattress shop on Google.

I have fibromyalgia and have an existing bed frame with a California king mattress sourced in the US, with base placed on the wooden frame. We will be keeping the wooden frame as it matches the furniture, so want a mattress in a size that fits, to replace the current item that I believe is not pocket sprung and keeps waking me with pressure points on shoulders, while if I don’t turn the mattress regularly to keep it form a sagging banana shape and that hurts after a while.
The wooden frame has a solid base 1 foot off the ground but the slats can be removed to leave the sides self standing. New bed could be placed on the slats or on the floor with its own legs within that base?

I’m hoping a mattress big enough can be found that fits, is pocket sprung, doesn't sag but is soft to lie on so as to relieve the pressure points.

We have a double Sleepeezee bed that’s soft and comfy for me but they don’t appear to make them big enough.

Also, any item of furniture we test in store always arrives as something else when it’s delivered. I’d like to test and buy on the spot, and take away there and then, just to stop this repeatedly happening.

I am 6’2 or 3 depending posture and if I’ve visited my chiropractor recently.
I am 18.5 to 19.5 stone depending on fluid retention for food intolerances etc
Prefer a one-piece mattress as zip together annoy me with the join.

Please advise

Happy new year

Regards Chris

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your comment and sorry to hear you're suffering from fibromyalgia and disturbed sleep. We've helped hundreds of people with this condition improve their sleep through more suitable mattress recommendations. We can create our entire hand made mattress range in any bespoke size so not to worry about that. There are cost increases dependant on the size but we can clarify that once a mattress selection has been made.

It sounds like the current mattress you have is a mix of foam and memory foam hence the sagging. Memory foam mattresses are renowned for being heat retentive and also settling very quickly without returning to their original form. This is usually because they are all one-sided mattresses. Before we delve into mattress recommendations we need to address why so many people struggle with their mattresses when they have fibromyalgia. Let's look at the absolute worse mattress.

The worst mattress for fibromyalgia:

Most fibromyalgia sleepers end up being sold very firm orthopaedic mattresses which are totally unsuitable. Leading to more discomfort caused by a mattress being too firm. This firmness can cause excess pressure against the body leading to joint pain which in turn leads to disturbance during the night from discomfort. Which is exactly the opposite of what you need with this condition.

With many mattress retailers simply suggesting an orthopaedic mattress for Fibromyalgia this exacerbates the issue by pairing up sufferers with incredibly firm mattresses. You need a suitable supportive mattress with a very forgiving top layer to help you sink and make micro-adjustments throughout the night without feeling like you're lying on top of a table.
Therefore you want to avoid anything that has firmer upholstery, spring units or is listed as orthopaedic.

The best mattress for fibromyalgia to relieve pressure:

Based on your size and requirements we would recommend a 1.4 medium gauge spring. Although your weight just puts you in the firm 1.6 gauge pocket spring category, you're also quite tall. Matched with the fact you certainly don't need excess support we would advise a medium gauge spring. You can find more on why spring tensions need to be based on your bodyweight in our guide below.

To give you enough progressive comfort and softness without sinking too far then we would recommend the Artisan Naturals mattress in a one piece as I know you don't like zip & link mattresses. Which can be made extra long for your bed frame. This mattress is fine for slats, though we would always ask you check the gaps between the slats to make sure they are either under 2inch apart or if not you place some mdf or ply over the top. This is to stop the gaps between the slats damaging or contorting the mattress. You can read more on how to remedy potential slatted base problems.
It features a calico encased vanadium coated pocket spring, the same as Vispring use and has 85% natural fibre fillings.

Meaning its one of the coolest and most responsive mattresses available. These fibres are highly responsive and breathable. It also has a forgiving top comfort layer which will help reduce pressure during the night.

Why John Ryan By Design doesn't have stores or shops:

We do not have a shop or showroom as we are online based. This is how we can keep our prices so competitive compared to other retailers as we don't have retail overheads or expensive marketing costs which would inevitably be passed onto you. However, we provide a full advice service unlike retail shops to fully understand your needs. We are mattress geeks and will only recommend a mattress that meets your needs rather than you just having to guess in a retail showroom. Which is probably why when the mattress arrives it never feels right!

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance for fibromyalgia Chris. Once you've had a look at the above please give us a call to email to discuss the costs for your size and additional length required.

If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
