Harrisons beds versus Vi Spring

Hi John and Ryan, Great website!

I am looking to buy a superking bed to replace our current 10 year old cheap kingsize. I am 6'6'' and just under 17 stone. My wife is only 9 stone but prefers a firmer bed and is quite happy with our current firm one with DAPW down/feather topper. We've tried out various beds and both really like the Harrisons range and my preference was the Ruby 8000 in firm while my wife was happy with any of the medium ones. I liked the Vi Spring beds once I was lying down, although even the firm felt on the soft side for me, and I REALLY didn't like the way the bed collapsed down at the edge because of the springedged base- this is a dealbreaker for me. I think we either need a firm edge base like the Harrison which I thought was great (do you offer this?) or a standard platform. I'm looking at either the Artisan 1500 or Tailored pocket 2000- can't make up my mind!

Firm for me and medium for my wife. Ideally I didn't want to spend much more that £1500. What do you think would suit us best?

Many thanks >

Hi Nick,

Unfortunately, we cannot provide direct like-for-like comparisons with Harrison products, as their springs are entirely different and their upholstery specifications are not itemised or weighted.

You make a good observation regarding the edge support on Vi-Spring mattresses and bases. Vi-Spring manufactures mattresses without traditional edge support rods, relying instead on hand side-stitching. This design provides an even level of support across the entire sleeping surface; however, it can lead to the "roll-off" sensation you experienced. While this is rarely an issue on Super Kingsizes or larger, it can be noticeable on Double or Kingsize beds where space is more limited. Adding a side support frame can make the perimeter feel slightly firmer, but the added edge support generally outweighs this.

I understand your concern about the Vi-Spring feeling "too soft"—I would describe it as "forgiving," which is how the mattress is designed to feel. The springs should yield slightly as you move. If they do not, the overall support is likely too firm. You can read more about pocket springs here.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Spring tension corresponds directly to the wire gauge used. For example, our "medium" spring uses a 1.4mm gauge, which would be unsupportive for you but ideal for your wife. The volume of upholstery also impacts the overall feel.

There is also the level of upholstery used within the mattress that will have an effect on how the mattress feels when completed. Different fibres, the amount of each fibre (GSM) and the way that they are layered create an overall feel. Your comfort preferences, along with your sleep positions. The Artisan 1500 is constructed with 53% natural fibres and has a firmer medium overall feel, whilst the Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 features 85% natural fibres with a true medium overall level of comfort. Our article here explains all about the GSM, grammes per square metre.

Natural fibres provide a cooler sleep surface, help you regulate your body temperature and are more durable than synthetic fibres, which means the lifespan of the mattress will be longer. Our article here explains about natural fibres used in mattress manufacturing.

Building a pocket sprung base

Additionally, our Artisan pocket sprung bases feature a true edge/firm edge design, where the sides of the base support the perimeter of the mattress and house the internal spring unit.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
