Help in choosing Artisan Range

Hi, I need your recommendation for your Artisan range pocket sprung mattress, I am a 53 kg woman, 163cm who sleeps with my husband with the same height around who weighs around 80 kg. My husband prefers a firm mattress. I am a side sleeper, he is a back sleeper. So we bought Heirloom Pocket Sprung mattress from Bensons which came in soft, medium and firm tension. It comes with pillow topper sewn to the mattress. We bought the firm one. It turned out to be too firm for me, so I exchanged it for soft tension. Unfortunately after a few weeks, the mattress has became too soft for me and gave me upper back pain. And I could no longer exchange it anymore. I was so disappointed that Bensons wasn't really helpful. Back then, I am used to sleep in coil spring mattress, so I noticed when we have the heirloom pocket sprung mattress, I feel tension/pressure to my head (upper ear) when trying to sleep ( I am a side sleeper). I feel this head tension on both the firm and soft mattress, is this normal? or maybe I am not suitable for pocket sprung mattresses?. I am thinking to buy Artisan range now, but so confused as it comes with Medium, Medium/Firm, Firm. and there are so many ranges of Artisan from Soft to firm. Please can you help me with my questions. There's so many good reviews in your company, so thinking to try. Thank you so much! _ Vonny_

Hi Vonny,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is the we do not make nor recommend pillow top mattresses for the reasons detailed in this article.

Secondly, we would not put either of you on a firm tension mattress as your body weights actually dictate a soft spring for you and a medium for your husband. We do not make any coil sprung mattresses, but do not think that the change from that to a pocket sprung one will have caused the problems you refer to. It is more likely a result of the level of upholstery and the materials used in that upholstery and, as you will be aware, the description of the Heirloom is somewhat vague in terms of the upholstery by way of GSM (grams per square metre), which prevents us from providing an opinion as to quality and performance.

As a side sleeper, you need softer upholstery layers to accommodate the weight being spread over a reduced area than if you were on your back. Please view the Artisan Luxury, which can have the spring tension selected to suit, soft for you and medium for your husband in king size and above. This also has the softest upholstery in the range, making it ideal for a side sleeper.

I would also recommend that you also look at the Artisan Bespoke 004/Artisan Naturals as both these mattresses have a more medium comfort layer which may be better for you both since your husband prefers a mattress that is slightly firmer.   Both of these mattresses can be made with a soft spring tension for you and a medium spring tension for your husband.

We trust that this is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind regards Julie
