Hypnos Bespoke Grandeur Mattress from Furniture village Review & Comparison
Hi
I’ve purchased a Hypnos Bespoke Grandeur Mattress from Furniture village and have been looking at the Hypnos website to see if I can compare it to one they actually sell. I’ve asked Furniture village what Hypnos range it comes from and they said that the Bespoke Grandeur is exclusive to them. Was wondering if this is true or not or have they made up their own name on a cheaper mattress? Or is there some sort of certificate of authentication I can ask to confirm it is what it is if there is such a thing?
Also, does it sound like a good mattress for the money as can’t see any reviews for it anywhere online or on their website. Any Info would be great. I wish I read the reviews for the company beforehand as they seem to have a bad reputation.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Laura
Hi Laura,
Thanks for getting in touch to ask about this Hypnos mattress from Furniture Village.
A lot of retailers will have 'exclusive' models that only they sell provided by companies such as Hypnos. It's been a trick of the trade for years so it's hard to price check or compare as these models can't be found elsewhere. However, you can still compare mattresses, providing you know what's inside them. Which we can show you in this comment to help.
To be able to compare mattresses you need to know:
- The pocket spring tension - often mistaken for comfort which it isn't, that's provided by the upholstery on top
- The GSM (Grams per square meter) and blends of all mattress upholstery
- The mattress detailing - ie hand side stitching, cover fabric details etc
- Details of the exact guarantee or warranty that mattress offers
The problem Laura is that nearly all mattress retailers and sellers choose not to disclose what's in their mattresses exactly. We know why they do this but for legal reasons can't publish that on here. Sometimes if you're tenacious and contact them directly they will let you know but it's not information that's usually readily available as you have found.
However, we have found the breakdown and partial detail on the Hypnos Grandeur mattress from Furniture Village which shows that at least they are making some moves to saying exactly what is inside their mattresses.

The mattress has 1800 ReActivePro™ pressure relieving, expertly engineered pocket springs, each with 10 active turns for responsive support exactly where you need it. Triple Edge Protection™
We do have a few niggles with the listing. For example, all-natural latex can be quite misleading, because unless it states 100% natural latex then the natural blend can be as low as 5% vs 95 synthetic latex. From the images this is grey graphite synthetic latex so will be a blend with a usually nominal amount of natural latex in the mix.
Also its not a 10% natural mattress given there's polyester blended with that cotton, again without knowing the blend you have no idea of whether its a 50/50 blend or a 99/1 blend!
Spring Tensions Explained:
The listing wrongly states that the pocket springs will give a medium or firm feel. The feel of a mattress is always based on the upholstery, in this case, it looks very much like a medium feel mattress. Spring tensions are given names, usually soft, medium or firm which relate to either a 1.2, 1.4 or 1.6 spring wire gauge respectively. People choose them thinking they are choosing the feel. However, pocket springs should always be chosen based on your bodyweight alone not how you want the mattress to feel. See below.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The ReActivePro are a synthetic spunbond pocket spring. You can read more on them here.
How to compare mattresses:
Now that you have all the detail (well some of it in Hypnos's case) you can start to compare. Unfortunately, you've already purchased and the likelihood of being able to return it without a fault is low. At best you'll probably to able to gamble to exchange for a different Furniture Village model.
Ideally, you would line up the models you're looking at and look at the GSM amounts, fillings and pocket spring type ie calico vs cheaper synthetic springs. That way you can see what you're getting for your money in a new mattress.
Mattress Authenticity:
You raise an interesting point, but in all honesty, you should feel that wherever you choose to buy your mattress from is trustworthy. This in part goes with the amount of detail that retailers are willing to share.
Is the Hypnos Grandeur good value for money?
The Hypnos Grandeur retails at £2269 for a kingsize, that is before any of the multiple sales. You can read more on mattress sales here and why you need to take them with a pinch of salt. Have a look at our Artisan Latex below for our nearest comparison. Showing all the GSM's, spring wire options and mattress details. Along with our no-fuss Guarantee here.
The Hypnos has 2120GSM of fibres whereas the Artisan Latex has 3150GSM so significantly more. Also, the Artisan Latex is 100% Natural fibre whereas the Hypnos is more than likely a synthetic blend. The Artisan Latex also uses vanadium coated calico pocket springs not synthetic spunbond springs like the Hypnos. It’s also 2 sided.
