Hi,
We have a John Ryan originals mattress with your previous 50% latex topper which is brilliant, if a very tall combination!
Now looking for a mattress for a 12 year old boy. Clearly within the life of this mattress, he will grow a lot and go from probably around 50kg to around 90kg. He Loves sport and I've seen some "sport" mattresses with testimonials from sports teams etc, such as the R90 Endo from sportsleepcoach and the sports therapy mattresses. They seem to be memory foam/cool foams over a reflex base.
In shops, he loves the Tempur cloud and the Latexsense Opulence (talalay over Dunlop) and generally likes a soft to medium feel.. He also gets very hot in bed, hence tending away from traditional memory foam.
Any ideas about what in your range would suit, without breaking the bank (!) and what do you think of the "sports" type ranges?
I've also looked at the eve/Bruno/sleeping duck/leesa type mattresses. They seems to be latex/memory foam over a firmer base. Is that firmer base necessary for support?
And one final questions, I also need a new mattress at some point. Can the VAT be reclaimed on any of your mattresses for a chronic disabling back problem? The Mammoth, healthbeds memory flex etc can all allow a VAT reclaim.
Sorry for so many questions!
Thanks

Hi Tasmin,

Great to hear from you again and glad the combination has worked for you!

Ok sports mattresses are a very interesting area. We've trialled some of these and I've even seen some of the early mammoth prototypes years ago. You're right that they have some heavyweight sports personality recommendations.  I couldn't comment on the validity of these in light of accepted mattress science. What I would say is sports types are usually at the height of their fitness with minimal aches pains and sprains, as they have physio to massage these out, so bear that in mind with any mattress reviews. It would be interesting to do a study of retired sports personalities and what mattresses they favour, solid core latex I'd guess after years of brutal sports injuries! ie something progressive and responsive.

I'm not really sure looking at the design of the sports mattresses, why sports has been used other than marketing. A mattress should be supportive for the given body weight and have some comfort layers for the sleepers preference and that's really the golden formula. I wouldn't be able to design a mattress perfect for sports people as its simply too broad. However, I could make recommendations to each of those sports people based on their needs what they require. Do you catch my drift?!

The mammoth is a foam based mattress using castellated, cut foam, to give some softness to the otherwise very firm support foam. That's it, on the model I saw some time ago. They do a pocket sprung and some type of latex, not sure what the blend is, topped sprung mattress too. There's very little info on the densities or blends of foams which make it almost impossible to compare. The bases are all very firm reflex or support foam, something your son simply wont need. Not unless he's getting to 15 stone in weight!

The R90 Endo follows the same suit, very firm foam and castellated coolblue foam like the coolblue we use which is 70kg but less heat retentive than memory foam. It is quite a firm hybrid foam though so not sure it is suited for your son who likes a soft mattress.

I'd say these mattresses would be too firm and too warm for him as they are entirely made of foam.

The Tempur cloud may also be too warm as it's again entirely made of foam, our Hybrid 4 is our comparator to the cloud so have a look at the link to see the prices and construction.

What might be a better method is to marry up say a laygel 60kg hybrid topper with our Origins Comfort. A similar but slightly cheaper combination to yours. That should give him the softness he needs but with enough support to get him to the 13-14 stone mark later in life without it being too soft. You could have a look at our outlet to see if any Origins comforts are available there to keep the price down. I think this would be the best bespoke option, it will be the coolest and a mattress that will allow him to grow too. The solid foam could be too hot for him but with this combination he will get a breathable core mattresses and topper both of which can be turned and rotated to increase the lifespan of the bed. I think anything else will be too expensive, ie solid core 100% natural latex like our Fusion 3.

As for VAT, we don't offer exemptions as this is usually something that medical aid products can apply for. We don't class our mattresses as medical aids as that's a completely different market. However, our accountant has advised us in the past that you can retrospectively claim back the VAT in some cases if needed for a disability. However, the onus would be on you I'm afraid.

We hope that helps Tasmin. If you need more advice please give us a call on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
