Deborah

We recently stayed at a hotel using the Naturalmat superb latex mattress and we are looking for what you would recommend please as a direct mattress comparison?

It is difficult as you do not appear to have a showroom to try mattresses and it is a big investment.

Thank-you

Hi Deborah,

Thanks for getting in touch about a mattress comparison.

Looking at the Naturalmats website listing its a medium feel latex and pocket spring mattress. Let's have a look a bit deeper to see what's inside.

Pocket Springs: The listing states cotton covered pocket springs but there's no tension or gauge specified so it's really difficult to know what support it will give you in the long term. A number of hotels use very soft mattress choices as for a couple of nights - and after a few drinks and dinner - these super-soft beds feel divine. However, in the long term, most people need a bit more support for day to day sleeping. There's also no amount so we don't know if its the minimum in a kingsize of 600 or the maximum available in a kingsize of 2000.

Organic Lambs Wool & Latex Mattress Fibres: It's great to see a mattress using a mix of natural fibres. It's a shame that they don't list the GSM (Grams per square meter) so you can compare and work out exactly how this will feel in the long term. Thinner Latex layers tend to totally compress really quickly and part of the benefit of latex is its push back. Which is why we use 6cm in our Latex models. Wool is an incredibly soft and breathable material which is nice to see. Again without the GSM, this could be 200gsm or 2000gsm and the difference will significantly affect the lifespan and comfort of the mattress.

Latex Density: The latex in the listing also has no density so you don't know if its 60,70 or 80kg latex (ie 60 is the softest and 80 the firmest). It also looks like a graphite synthetic Latex blend by the look of it. A man-made substitute for real Latex or a blend with partial Natural Latex. You would need to ask Naturalmat what the exact composition is as we are just surmising from the image and our experience. We use Natural Talalay Latex in a 70kg density in our Artisan Latex. Natural Latex is a cream colour if you see our articles on Latex mattresses and the blends are usually grey, like the Naturalmat listing. Hence our questions over what percentage of Natural Latex is blended with the synthetic.

Spring insulator: Looking at the pictures on their listing they are using a spring-insulator-layer/">polyester or white fibre spring insulator. Either than or they have forgotten to list it. It's a bright white colour, unlike the cream of the lambswool so we would guess this is a synthetic later to help the fibres above from settling. Definitely check with them as at £1600 you don't want the inclusion of polyester if you can help it!

Mattress Detailing: It's nice to see its tufted. However, it's not clear if its a one or two-sided mattress. Which makes all  the difference again to lifespan and price point. At £1600 for a king-size, you would certainly expect it to be 2 sided. It's a relatively thin mattress at 25cm which includes the tufts. Which may help explain the depth and potential low gsm of fillings. Again, we would advise you ask Naturalmat to confirm.

It's machine side stitched so there's no connection between the pocket spring unit and the sides. We hand side stitch all of our Artisan range to prevent bulging and add stability to our Calico encased vanadium coated pocket springs.

What mattress compares to the Naturalmat Superb?

Our closest comparison is the Artisan Latex - our Vegan plant fibre mattress that's 100% natural. It has a Calcio encased vanadium pocket spring available in 3 tensions/gauges depending on your bodyweight. Check out the guide below which explains spring tensions in more detail.

It has a medium feel in the top upholstery layers and is completely breathable. It's two-sided so you can use both sides to extend the life of the mattress. It is 27-30cm deep with tufts and contains a huge 3150GSM of 100% Natural fillings. It also has a 10-year guarantee. We use a total of 6cm Talalay Latex in this model.
