Origins Pocket Latex mattress vs Silentnight Pocket Latex 1400
Hello
We're interested in purchasing the above mattress mentioned. Can you please confirm?
1. Depth and please confirm whether it is medium firm
2. Is it suitable for wooden bed frame with slates? Slat width is about 7.5cm with 8cm separation.
3. Does it combats allergens and dust mite, so we can enjoy a fresher, more hygienic sleeping experience.
4. Does it provide coolness just like hybrid pocket-spring-mattress?
5. Does it provide independent movement so that another doesn't feel it when another person is moving?
6. Is it good for minimising back pain? I have read traditional coil are good for relieving back pain but not sure about pocket sprung.
7. What's the comparison with Silentnight version?
8. I am not familiar about your company, do you have customer reviews and feedback for the mattress mentioned.
9. Most companies such as from Silentnight offer yo remove the old mattress just for £30 but yours is doubled. Can you reduce the price to £30 for removing old mattress?
10. Are there discounts available? Emma and Dormeo offers 30% discount
Even Silentnight offers discount. It would be nice to offer discounts.
11. Are these machine built?
Hi Jazweed,
Many thanks for your comment asking about our Origins Pocket Latex mattress vs Silent Nights 1400 Latex mattress. The two are very different.
Firstly to be able to compare mattresses you need to know two things:
- Pocket spring gauge, amount and material
- GSM (Grams per square meter) of all upholstery that is then used as the mattress comfort layers.
Let's take a look at the Silent night mattresses description.
- 1400 Mirapocket Spring System
- A comfort layer of Natural Latex
- A Purotex cover that that combats allergens and dust mite
- Mattress Depth: 31cm
- Comfort Level: Medium/Firm
Apart from the spring number, there is no discernable detail allowing you to compare. The spring tension is always dictated by your bodyweight. See our guide below.
Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
---|---|---|
Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
A kingsize mattress should contain anywhere between 800-1600 springs in a single layer and be thought of as an acceptable amount. Anything higher than this means usual layers of springs or in some cases the dreaded micro spring which you want to avoid.
The listing for the silent night mattress loosely details 'natural latex' but there's a big difference between 100% natural latex and synthetic latex. At this price point of sub £1000 there is no way it is 100% natural. Also, they don't list the type of latex or what it's blended with. You can read more on why this is so vitally important on our latex mattress guide here.
What is Purotex in mattresses?
Purotex is a new form of mattress antibacterial coating now used on mattresses. Based* on natural materials. Note the asterisk of caution, based does not always mean 'made from'.However, there is no actual information on what this is, what it is actually made of etc. We advise that diligent mattress maintenance each month is far more effective than any spray on a mattress. We don't spray out beds with any such chemicals or liquids.
Let's take a look at how the silent night mattress listed should be by showing you by detailing the information we provide on all of our mattresses so you can compare.

Ok so onto your other questions which we will reply to in list format for ease of reference.
1.The Origins Pocket Latex mattress is 30-33cm as it's a tufted mattress. It is a firmer feel in the top layer given the latex. The spring tensions a 1.4 suitable for up to 16 stone. If you're heavier than this you will need a 1.6 gauge.
2. Our John Ryan mattresses are suitable for a slatted base but we would always recommend boarding over slats. See our guide and why we recommend this here.
3. Mattress maintenance and regular washing should be more than sufficient to keep your bed hygienic. See our guide here for our recommended schedule of mattress cleaning!
4. Latex is the coolest of all foams but will still be more heat retentive than natural fibres. If you're a warm sleeper you need to look for wool or a natural fibre instead.
5. It is a pocket sprung mattress which helps reduce transference between sleepers compared to open coil.
6. Open coil are the cheapest crudest spring unit. There is no evidence they offer good support for back pain. In most cases choosing the correct spring tension for your bodyweight vs a firm spring is the best thing you can do to help a bad back when buying a new mattress.
7. Please read above for our comparison based on the components and materials.
8. Please check out our 2000+ 5 Star reviews on Trustpilot here.
9. Removal of an old mattress vs recycling it back so there is no waste are two different things. We 100% recycle our old mattresses, hence the difference in cost.
10.We don't offer discounts but one price for everyone. We would always approach companies with caution that offer hefty discounts as it does throw shade over what the bed was actually worth in the first place. After all, no one is selling beds at a loss! You can read more on mattress sale tactics here.
11. All of our mattress are built by hand unlike cheaper counterparts.
It maybe helpful to show what can be expected based on your budget too and then our guide on buying a mattress.
