Recommendation on correct mattress

Hannah Griffin

Hello,

I have recently bought a new bed and mattress. I have an Ercol bed with a slatted base and John Lewis natural collection fleece wool mattress in medium tension. I am very uncomfortable on my new bed! I toss and turn all night and wake up with aches and pains. I previously had an organic latex, horsehair and coir mattress on a slatted base which was pretty comfortable but always a bit too firm. It was about 14 years old so I needed a new one. I weigh only 8 stone and don’t have any natural padding! I also mostly sleep on my front. My current mattress feels like it dips and sags but is also too hard at the same time! I am not so keen on the dips from the buttons as my body dips into these. I liked the flatness of my previous mattress. Please advise!! Kind regards, Hannah

Hi Hannah,

Thank you for your question.

From the information provided and at your body weight, you do require a mattress that has a medium support together with an overall medium feel from the top layers.   As you are a front sleeper, you should not sleep on a mattress that is too soft otherwise this will put an unnatural arch in your back leading to back ache.

The dips that you are referring to in the mattress, are what are termed as 'tufts' and these are found in many many pocket sprung mattresses. This traditional upholstery technique has been around for centuries, and is commonly used on upholstered furniture, seats and mattresses. It’s incredibly useful for making sure any upholstery layers within a mattress stay where they’re supposed to be. It helps pull together each upholstery layer through the spring unit, binding it on each side. Fixing it in place.  The only way to get round this would be to add a mattress topper  which will not only protect your mattress but also add extra comfort layers.   Our mattresses all have tufts apart from our Origins Pocket Latex 1500 which contains two layers of talalay latex on top of individual pocket springs.  However the overall feel from this mattress would be too firm at your body weight.  We also product Natural Latex mattresses which are in our Fusion range but again these would be far too firm for you as they either have a medium to firm feel or an extra firm feel.

If you are willing to add a mattress topper, I would recommend looking at our Origins Pocket 1500 which would give you the correct support together with an overall medium feel from the top layers.  The fillings within this mattress are man made but it does contain a layer of wool.  This mattress is one of our best sellers due to it being exceptionally good quality for the price.

If you require a mattress however that contains more natural fillings, I would suggest looking at our Artisan Naturals which again would give you an overall medium comfort from the top layers and can be made with a medium spring tension for the support.   The fillings within this mattress are 85% natural and again this mattress is one of our best sellers.

I hope the above is of assistance to you, however, please do not hesitate to telephone our office whereby one of our small friendly team will be able to assist you further - 0161 437 4419

Kind regards
Julie
