Softest mattress for platform divan base?

Sam

Hi. I’m looking for the softest feel mattress I could get to pair with my platform base.

I suffered back pain in the past and needed to swap a sprung base to a platform one to firm up a mattress. My mattress feels far too hard now and whilst I’m not getting any back pain, my shoulders are starting to hurt. I quite literally feel like I’m lying on a plank, even with the addition of a wool topper and a cheap pocket sprung mattress between the top mattress and platform base!

I’m nervous to ditch the platform base and wondered whether there was a mattress which would be soft enough to go on top of the platform base, or whether I need to get a sprung base to get the comfort I need. I am around 8 and a half stone.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Hi Sam,

Many thanks for your question on the softest mattress for a platform top base. Sorry to hear that changing your base from a sprung edge to a platform has created such a sleeping issue.

Sprung edge bases can make a mattress feel marginally softer but usually its not a huge step change in terms of mattress firmness.

It sounds like the jump to a solid top platform divan is proving too firm for you. The fact you're having to add a cheap pocket sprung mattress is concerning along with a topper.

Ideally, I'd need to know what the original mattress is to advise fully. As I said, usually a sprung edge base and platform top don't have such a drastic effect. It may be that the original mattress is just unsuitable based on your weight and seeing preference.

The fact that your back and shoulders are hurting suggests that the mattress is far too firm for you. We've written extensively about why a firm mattress is not a good idea for a bad back!

What's the softest mattress?

To help guide you these are the two softest mattresses we hand make as part of our range. It must be stated that the spring tension of any mattress should be based on your bodyweight and never chosen mistakenly as the 'comfort feel' of a mattress. Ie a soft spring should not be chosen for a soft feel mattress. It is the upholstery layers on top of any given mattress spring or support unit that provide the ultimate comfort feel. Never the spring in isolation!
