Suitable mattress from Artisan Range suitable for two people

Hello and good morning

We are looking to replace a King Size Relyon Pocket Emerald 2200 mattress that has served us very well for several years, maybe even a couple too many! We use a good

(I think wool) bed topper and also a mattress protector cover.

My wife is 5’ 6” tall  and 9 stone, I am 5’ 10 tall and 16 stone 3lb. We have both equally enjoyed the pillow top feel of comfort whilst finding the bed supportive. In contrast neither of us like the much applauded firmness of the Premier Inn mattresses nor do we want the other extreme. We have read your comments about the pillow tops and you will see from the below our current thinking.

We are looking at your Artisan Bespoke, Artisan 002 and Artisan Luxury ranges . We are also considering items like the John Lewis Cotswold 19000 and Harrison Spinks 19000 (Which I expect are identical) and a couple of the Vi-spring offerings.

We are I think tending towards a mattress in the medium tension and are not adverse to considering one of your clearance bargains. Our ideal budget is less than £3000.

I’ve read and read the descriptions and the brochures on your mattresses but frankly have not been able to definitively decide the best for our needs to the point of getting more confused the more I read.

I just wonder if you have any words of guidance or advice as to which of your 3 are best suited and best value albeit there isn’t much in the pricing of the 3.

Many thanks

Hi Chris,

We appreciate you reaching out to us about a new mattress and sharing details about your current mattress as well as the ones you've tested in a showroom. It's important to note that trying out mattresses in a showroom may not accurately represent how they will feel throughout the night. Your body typically needs about four weeks to adjust to a new mattress fully.

We have been looking for more information about the Relyon Pocket Emerald 2200 mattress. While we can confirm that it features a pillowtop design, we are unable to provide details on the specific upholstery fillings used or whether the 2200 pocket springs are arranged in two layers.    The problem is that pillow-top mattresses can severely reduce the lifespan of your bed and once they compress, that’s it you’re stuck with it so you are always better with a mattress that can be fully flipped over as this allows the fillings to settle evenly which means that the lifespan of the mattress is far longer than a mattress that can only be rotated round.

When selecting a new mattress, it's essential to find the right balance between support and comfort. Support is primarily provided by the internal spring unit, which is tailored to your height and weight, while comfort comes from the upholstery layers on top of the springs. This comfort level often depends on your preferred sleeping position—whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach.

At your body weights and heights, we would recommend a medium level of support and this would be the case whichever of our mattresses you purchased.   If you are side sleepers then you could choose a comfort level of either soft or medium as this would provide cushioning for shoulders hips and knees,  if you are back sleepers then a medium comfort level would keep your spine aligned but if you are front sleepers, then a slightly more supportive feel would stop your tummy sinking into the upholstery fillings causing an unnatural arch in your back.  However the lighter you are the firmer the mattress will feel and vice versa.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We have had a look at the John Lewis Cotswold 19000 and the Harrison Spinks 19000 mattresses which as you confirmed are the same mattresses. This mattress is fully turnable and contains the following :-

Filling composition

Hemp, flax, British wool, Cotswold wool

Soft

Mattress tuft type

This mattress is described as providing a softer level of comfort from the upholstery fillings however the amount of springs contained within the mattress would provide a responsive support.

When looking at spring counts, these are based on a kingsize mattress and there are only so many springs that can be put inside a mattress as one layer which is between 1000 and 2000 pocket springs.   If a mattress contains well over this amount work on the basis that the more springs contained within a mattress the less room there is for upholstery fillings.    It is not the amount of springs which gives the mattress its overall feel, it is the upholstery fillings as they are there to provide comfort.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 features 2508 calico-encased pocket springs arranged in two tiers, delivering a buoyant and responsive support system. While it is designed to offer a medium level of comfort, our experience suggests that it feels slightly firmer than a true medium, which may necessitate the addition of a separate mattress topper to achieve a softer feel.

The Artisan Bespoke is the firmest mattress that we make and would be too firm for you both from a comfort point of view.

The Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress that we make from a comfort point of view containing 1476 calico encased pocket springs.

If you are unsure as to the level of comfort you require, it may be best to opt for an overall medium feel which means the mattress will feel neither too soft nor too firm and if a tad too firm by adding a separate mattress topper, you can soften down those upholstery fibres.    With this in mind, you could look at either the Artisan Naturals which contains 85% natural fibres along with 1600 calico encased pocket springs or the Artisan Bespoke 004 which contains 100% natural fibres together with 1600 calico encased pocket springs.    Both of these mattresses provide an overall medium feel.

We hope the above is of assistance however if you require further information or advice, please telephone our Office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our friendly team who will be able to assist you further.

Kind regards Julie Collier
