TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Should I choose a pocket sprung mattress and topper combination?

Glen asked

I have been reading on your website which is very informative while researching for a new mattress.

I realise I need to go the pocket sprung route but not sure which one due to me being 6ft 3″ and 17st while my wife is 5ft 6″ and weighs 9 St ish.

We currently have a king size Silent night miracoil mattress which is knackered to say the least.

It is noisy and gives me lower back pain.

I looked in Dreams at there pocket sprung, latex pocket sprung and a memory foam pocket sprung mattresess which is a sales setup and all were around the £650 mark.

I am worried about the foam and latex dipping and making me too hot.

Would pocket sprung with a topper be your preferred after reading some other posts.

How would your equivalent mattresses compare to these as this would be a reasonable budget but I can push to more if it really does make the difference.

Our current mattress cost £350 4 years ago which I know is money wasted now.

I don’t want to make the same mistakes again.

I would appreciate your thoughts >

Hi Glen,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, we are unable to advise which of our mattresses compare with those referred to and made or supplied by Dreams because, unlike us, full internal build specifications are not disclosed.

Given the weight differential, the best option would be either a dual spring system or the zip and link option.  You would need a firm spring tension and your wife is borderline between the soft and the medium spring tensions.

Spring TensionWire diameter (Gauge)Weight Range
Soft1.2mmBespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

Your current mattress is sold as a medium feel mattress. We only have one one-sided mattress, due to the comfort layer being latex which is more durable and responsive and less heat retentive than memory foam, the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 which would feel medium to soft for yourself but would be very firm for your wife.  If you want to purchase a two-sided mattress the Origins Pocket 1500, is a medium in the comfort layers.  We would recommend you try a new mattress for a few weeks before you consider putting a topper on it to get the true feel of the comfort layers, as it may not be necessary.
