Trying to replace Ikea Sultan mattress

MDC asked
3rd June 2012

Hi there, I’m in need of some advice on my next bed purchase for me and my partner. I’m currently sleeping on an Ikea SULTAN HAMNVIK mattress, and MALM bed-frame. Unfortunately I was ill informed and lacking in good advice when I bought my current bed. I have suffered since, as after 2 years of sleeping on it, only the first 6 months were spent in relative peace. It has now sagged dramatically, the springs have gone and it’s generally like sleeping on a bad sofa and my back has suffered to.

So we are now looking for a new Divan bed (as judging from past experiences with Divan’s, they work for us). Me and my partners weight combined is roughly 33 stone, so we need a sturdy, supportive bed frame and mattress.

We both suffer from back pain (Thoracic region) and also neck pain. Also our bedroom get’s quite stuffy so we need decent heat regulation from our mattress. Ideally we go for firm mattresses to support our weight, but we would like just a little softer than the firmest, as some of the firm mattresses we’ve gone for in the past have been too hard. Noise is an issue for us, as the current bed we have is terribly creaky, all I have to do is cough and the bed creaks!

So, strong and support are the definite keywords for us. I’m willing to spend that bit more this time round as I realize how much of an investment a good bed is. I’ve had a look at what you offer and the Sequence 2000 looks like just what we need, am I right in thinking this?

I’m also willing to explore the possibility of a zip and link style bed, if this will be more comfortable for us. Either way I’m extremely open and willing to hear any of your thoughts. Many thanks, MDC.

Hi MDC.

Thanks for your question about IKEA mattresses we have a very detailed comparison guide to their range here.

We no longer manufacture the Sequence Pocket 2000 mattress, the Origins Pocket 2000 is also suitable for people of above average bodyweight at an affordable price.

The divan base is equally well built with additional timbers.

Please see the following article on what questions you need to think about when buying a new mattress or bed.

The next alternative option is to look at The Artisan Naturals where the spring tensions can be adjusted precisely to you and your partners sleeping side.

A few tweaks here and there will give you your perfect mattress – and one that will last years – not months.

This is a tricky area to get right but not impossible.

We offer zip link options and also in the Artisan range we can make a one-piece split tension mattress, in a kingsize mattress upwards. Zip link mattresses don’t necessarily create more comfort, but they do provide accessibility solutions, and if customers need 2 very different support levels due to large weight differences then zip links solve this problem as well.

Your needs and requirements are above the norm, but you should not be paying more than you need to to get the right combination.

Once you know the limitations and available options you will be in a better position to know what compromises may or may not be required.
