There was a lot of useful advice, courteously and patiently given.
There was a lot of very useful information, complete with easy to understand videos, on the website, explaining the quality of various components to a good mattress, which helped me to make the best choice for me.
It was possible, miracle of miracles, to actually phone the company, to receive patient and courteous help with the detail of any points of which I was still a little unsure. As a result I am very pleased with the choice of mattress and for the last 2 months have been getting better sleep.

We came across John Ryan when we were thinking of replacing our old mattress and we’re tempted by a promotion by Premier Inn. We found a very helpful review by John Ryan on their website which drew attention to possible shortcomings with the hotel type mattress. This put us on to John Ryan’s own beds. Their website and advice was extremely clear and helpful and their mattresses very reasonably priced.

The purchase process was quite easy although a telephone conversation/payment was required as their system didn’t seem to cope with the new banking verification procedures. That didn’t particularly matter as the telephone conversation was friendly and helpful.

Delivery and notification of delivery was good.

The mattress is really good and just what we had hoped for.

We have had our mattress just over a month now, we bought an Artisan Natural half medium and half firm spring tension in king size.
The customer service from start to finish was great. Everyone I spoke to was helpful and concerned that my choice was the right one for my husband and myself.
Ordering was easy and the company followed up by a confirmation telephone call.
Delivery was amazing, the mattress came earlier than the expected delivery date, the communication by the couriers was brilliant. The mattress was delivered as per their notification, there was plenty of communication between them and us. They quickly took the mattress upstairs, we recycled the packaging, though they were quite prepared to take it away, and they were on to another delivery after us.
The mattress is brilliant, both my husband and myself sleep really well and it has been the best mattress we have had in many years of marriage. Just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears – just right. Great support and also medium amount of softness above. We don’t need a topper as it is very cosy.
I would certainly recommend them and bought without trying was a doddle with their expertise.

An excellent experience all round
I am very happy with the King-size Artisan Naturals mattress I ordered. After just over two months, I can say it is exactly what I was looking for to replace my outgoing thirteen year old single mattress. The quality of the mattress is fantastic, even down to the small details like the precise and tidy stitching
or sturdy handles; which on a king-size, you will definitely be using!

In terms of choosing a mattress, you do have to take a small gamble as you don’t have any way to test it before committing but using the resources available on the website and speaking to the staff after you start your order, you can definitely make an informed decision on which mattress you want.

Delivery was straight-forward too, even with it needing to be delivered to a completely different address due to moving house prior to receiving the mattress. It was great that the old mattress I was using could be taken away and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way too.

After just over two months with my new mattress, I know it was the right choice and haven’t felt it needed any time to settle in as it has been wonderfully comfortable every time I have slept on it.

Overall, an excellent experience all round and I will gladly suggest John Ryan by Design to anyone who might be looking for a new mattress!

Approx 50 days in. Really happy with the mattress. I got the Artistan Naturals with the medium base, was a bit worried it would be too soft for me as I like a firm mattress but it’s plenty firm enough. I love it. Delivery was painless and feedback/advice from John Ryan very good. Worth the extra money.

Great service and products!
I was recommended JRD by a friend, so I knew the products were excellent. But I was pleasantly surprised by the honesty and consistency of service I received. They were thorough, calling me to talk through my order once I had placed it to make sure I was making the most informed decision. The bed itself has been excellent, and it only getting more comfortable with time.

Overall, I have zero hesitations recommending JRD to anyone looking for a high quality bed!

When we first started looking for a replacement bed, we visited the usual retail park suppliers, and then discovered the John Ryan Website. I had to convince myself that the gamble to buy a product without testing or viewing would be worthwhile. I should have just trusted the reviews and gone for it. We suffered lower back pain for a long time on an old “Posturepedic” mattress and since we’ve have this new one, we’ve been so much better. I feel like I’ve got the rolls Royce of beds now. very happy.
When I disposed of our old mattress, I took a look inside and was shocked to see cheap springs and around an inch of compressed foam, and some sort of grey material. Goes to show.

I swear my back pain has reduced since sleeping in this bed. Love the sheen and finish on the mattress too. It’s a heavy fella! I say go for it, so glad I did.

I should start by saying that my new bed frame and mattress are brilliant. The velvet frame looks great and the mattress (an artisan natural) is so comfortable that I’m wondering why I didn’t buy one years ago. However, the absolute stand out point of John Ryan By Design is the really good customer service. From my first conversation the person on the end of the phone was excellent and gave me great advice and recommendations. Having read many of the questions on the website I managed to confuse myself – again the person I spoke to was professional and helped me with my many questions. By the time I was ready to purchase my mattress I was completely confident with my decision.
Delivery was prompt and the guys delivering (during covid restrictions) were helpful and courteous.
There was a slight dent in the bed frame when it arrived, but it has since flattened out. What was great here was the team at John Ryan By Design were reassuring and helpful and again I felt confident with my purchase.
In summary- a great product with top class customer service accompanying it.

Amazingly comfortable mattress
Our Superking Artisan Naturals mattress is the most comfortable mattress we’ve ever slept on. It’s like sleeping on a cloud that holds you perfectly in place. I no longer get a burning in my hips and my husband no longer has backache in the morning. We thought it would take a while to get used to but from the first day our sleep improved massively.

I had been looking for a zip and link mattress, mainly motivated by the hope of having an uninterrupted nights sleep. I went to a well known department store to look for one, tried one or two out and learned just a little about materials used in mattresses, number of springs etc. I decided to look for more information and widen the search. Absolutely fantastic company and service! I have had a few pocket sprung, supposedly high end mattresses/beds but sadly, none have been that great. The mattress I have bought and it has been in use for a month now, I can honestly say it is the best mattresses I have ever had! And I have spine and hip problems that have improved a little since sleeping on this mattresses!! Both my husband and myself, have slept far better on this mattress. I stumbled across John Ryan by Design Ltd (JRD) when researching quality mattresses. The familiar names all popped up together with a range of review sites. The latter disappointed me because of their apparent devotion to synthetic materials, i.e. memory foam, and my partner and I had no desire to go down that road again. JRD first appeared in my search in the context of providing technical insight into mattress design which I immediately clicked on. I subsequently discovered the most comprehensive product information I have ever seen on a retail website. This is authoritative, provides detailed answers to hundreds of customer questions and honest comparisons between their products and big name (more expensive) competitors, in particular Vispring. We narrowed down our options (both side sleepers) and I called the JRD team to discuss our shortlist. Very helpful and friendly they were with no push to commit us to the most expensive offering. We decided to extend our budget to the Artisan Naturals mattress in king size and we are delighted we did: I can now sleep on my injured right shoulder for the first time in years. The quality is simply first class but I should point out that it is somewhat challenging to move / turn over due to size and weight. Purchasing a top quality handmade mattress on the web is obviously a risk, but we were reassured by JRD’s 60 day no quibble return / exchange guarantee and the company’s excellent Trust Pilot reviews. Delivery was on time and the mattress was very well packaged. Excellent all round and highly recommended.

Took us over a year to make the decision to order an Artisan Naturals Mattress from John Ryan. We’d never spent so much on a mattress in 31 years of marriage but we were impressed by the informative detail regarding the mattress construction and the insight into the way mattresses are sold and decided to treat ourselves.

Delivery was within the 28 days advised and delivery service was good.

We find the feel of the mattress really good and are getting better sleep despite the warm nights … not sure we’re looking forward to flipping the mattress in two weeks time … (75kg is a clear indication of how well built this mattress is)

I write this review after a year of sleeping on my divine bed. I have no regrets and can wholeheartedly say that this is one of the best purchases and decisions I have ever made. I did a lot of research before I made this purchase. I suffer from chronic back pain and I really wanted a bed high off the floor so it wasn’t so much strain on my back getting in and out of bed. I read their bed buying guide from front to back and from back to front and called them up about three times before I went for a medium artisan natural ottoman bed. This was just an extra bonus having the storage space underneath.
My days of waking up in a bad mood are over.
My back pain has got significantly less painful and I have a better quality of sleep since I purchased this bed.

Ordering and delivery went exactly to plan. The delivery drivers put the new mattress directly on the bed because it was so heavy and advised on airing.
The only reason I haven’t given 5 stars is because we’ve only slept in the mattress for a week and it’s very early to rate it although it’s very comfortable so far.
I was nervous about spending over £1000 on an item I hadn’t tried or seen but my experience so far gives me confidence I’ve made a good decision.

John Ryan – A Hidden Gem
Are they worth it, are reviews worth the paper they are written on. Well after spending over a decade living outside of the UK and buying a bespoken mattress in New Zealand the country in which we made our home we thought it was worth the money. After our beloved mattress wasn’t for us anymore we decided to seek a new one, wow I had this challenge to find one.. Forgetting how many choice we have in this country, with all this new fan dangled technology and all these different types it’s not a quick decision as it’s like a pair of shoes you have to try them to see if they’re right for you. You also know that at first they seem lovely in the shop but once you wear them for a bit the blisters appear and they’re the pair you don’t want to wear as you’re not sure you want to endure the pain. But you do as you firstly need them and you know at the end of the day the pain is worth it and once they have been broken in they’re the most comfortable thing you have ever had and you really don’t want to wear anything else. Luckily with a pair of shoes you can purchase several pairs and have a spare but with a mattress it’s a similar thing you need to break it in, you forget about this when buying and also the fact that when you’re testing them out in the shop you forget how many thousands of people have laid on that bed before you and how soft it is in comparison to the one you end up with. So our search for a new mattress began, so on the internet I went a looking for the ideal one, nearly in tears because it wasn’t going to be an easy and straight forward task. All these new types I had to wade my way through read up on them and then research as many as I could. Now that’s good but can you find the one you want or several on your list in one shop and that shop be local, the answer is no. You have to shop around and that’s what I did. I went to a couple of bed shops as local to me as possible and had the sales assistants come out with their sales spiel as they do, and you kind of get drawn in and not thinking that they are taking you from the cheapest bed to the most expensive one, and at the end of it you walk away thinking wow that’s what I have got to spend to get a good nights sleep. Not sure I want to spend that much, and knowingly know that that person will end up with a big commission in their pocket as they have convinced you that this is the right one for you. Well trick is go alone don’t take your partner as you can use that as an excuse not to buy. Don’t fall for the spiel, go around the shop testing out the beds yourself and narrowing it down to the ones you might be interested in. Don’t just lay on it for a few seconds, no lay on it as you would lay on your bed to go to sleep in the position you’d go to sleep in and stain it for a long time to get comfortable, and remember these have had many a people lay on them before you therefore they are softer than the one which arrives and you have to break it in. It always seems like when you go into a bed shop you forget these rules. You don’t have to buy straight away you can walk away and try not to be drawn in by all these terminologies these sales people give you and go to shops like John Lewis that their sales persons aren’t on commission and give you the spiel without the pressure, and they leave you in peace to test out their mattresses but are around if you need to question them.

After this I carried on researching on the internet and found one of these 100 days hybrid ones on special so we thought why not test it out what have we got to loose. Well little did I know we had a lot to loose, it arrived and we laid on it after the set period we were given after it arrived and thought wow can’t wait to go to bed tonight and sleep on that. From the first night I tossed and turned and was awake most of the night having to wake up and make a conscious decision on my position and each time I needed to rollover and change I woke up to do that rather than the natural movement you do in your sleep without waking. I woke up with hip and backache, on reading thought well this is like wearing a new pair of shoes and getting those blisters, my body getting used to the new mattress. Well as days turned into weeks and weeks into months, I was finding I was barely sleeping properly and waking with the most excruciating back pain that I was struggling to put shoes on without being in pain, sitting for too long made it worse and having to take tablets during the day to relieve the pain but I persevered through it in the hope it’ll improve. But sadly it didn’t I did however notify the manufacturers at the beginning of the purchase within the first few weeks and they said it may not be for us but give it time to settle. We found out that the one we had had delivered was faulty so they swapped it for a new one freezing the 100 day period, gave us a new one and restarted that trial, but again I still had issues with my back and hubby issues with his shoulder and neck. Despite lack of sleep I slept really well when we did but was the pain worth it no, so that one went back but before it did we had to find a replacement, John Ryan appeared in my research which I had seen it before and wish I had just gone to this one in the first place and not having to spend this time on the hybrid one giving me pain. But I can’t turn the clocks back however I do know that those types of mattresses aren’t for me and hubby.

After finding John Ryan’s website and reading as much as I could, finding reviews about their mattresses not only on their own website but outside. Reading upon the information given, I was astounded by how much information they had on this site, no matter where you went it was like an encyclopaedic of mattress knowledge.. But where could I test one of these out, I had the spiel but without having the person speak to me. They compared their mattresses like for like with others made in a similar way to how theirs was made, using the same type of materials and similar techniques. I then decided after reading the pages I wanted to speak to someone to find out where I could lay on one as they didn’t seem to have a shop nearby. I spoke to the most delightful, very knowledgable, and passionate about the product he was talking about, he answered all my questions of which I had many and answered them, making me relaxed knowing I had found a fantastic gem. It was like being an explorer and finding that buried treasure that had been lost for centuries and knowing you have struck gold and hit the jackpot. Well after speaking to Gary (Business Manager) and going to a shop that had a similar product which he stated was very similar so I could try out another brand and make the choice from their products so that I could then pick the right one from John Ryan. I know it sounds complicated, but them not having a shop brings the price down as they have no overheads to spend thus keeping the cost down for the customer.

We took the plunge and ordered an Artisan Naturals kingsize mattress. It came quicker than anticipated which isn’t a problem as they had stated a time but it was quicker, they delivered it and placed it on our bed and was told to leave it for as long as possible for it to settle. After that time we went for a lay down to see how it was and I forgot that it’s new like a pair of shoes and was harder than I expected. Having now had it for several weeks I can say there was a time that I wanted to send it back as my back pain was still there and I was struggling but in time it eased and now I can say it’s very comfortable, the back issue is still there but it’s slowly disappearing and I’m sleeping like a baby. Yes I do still wake up and turn over but I think that’s more to the fact of the previous mattress got me into a certain habit and now I’m breaking it, whereas I was waking nearly every hour to every hour and half to rollover or move positions now it’s only a couple of times if that. The mattress is slowly getting more comfortable and I know I have to rotate and flip it so will take a bit of time to get the mattress to the same comfort as one that’s in the shops but I’m prepared to persevere on this one as I feel we have most definitely found a little treasure at a very good price and to get this type of quality in comparison to others in the shops I would highly recommend this company and would most definitely purchase again from here. Having been ill for the past few weeks I’ve been tossing and turning on this mattress without waking up due to the mattress but due to my illness, finding that now I’m out of the nasty habit of waking to re-position that the hybrid mattress made me do and back to a proper sleeping pattern in the most comfortable bed ever. So Thank you John Ryan no more back or hip pain, I can sleep in whatever position I like without any discomfort. 10 out 10, 5 Stars the highest score you can give, I’m super impressed with not only the quality, the craftsmanship, the price and service this is what makes a top brand a combination of so many things, like I said a hidden Gem.

You are given 60 days trial period and they are confident that after those 60 days you’ll be very happy with your purchase, whilst at first I wasn’t sure as I felt after a few nights it should have alleviate by back pain and wanted so much to have a quick cure, knowing in my heart it’ll take the time for my body to adjust to the new mattress and the new mattress to adjust to us.. All I can say is persevere as it’s so worth the wait. So thank you Gary and thankyou John Ryan for such an awesome product and a good nights sleep eventually. It was worth waiting for now no more back pain and sleeping fantastically, everyone is different and what might work for one person not necessarily would work for another, all I’m saying don’t dismiss John Ryan give them a try you’ve not got much to loose apart from time you never know it too might be the one for you, you have 60 days

Excellent website to make my decision on mattress and call from JR to confirm I’d made the right choice. First delivery date was not convenient so rescheduled but new date not offered promptly or proactively by delivery company so an extended wait. Great service on delivery day, no complaints bringing heavy mattress up stairs, and advice from the delivery guys on keeping mattress in top condition appreciated. Quality mattress (Artisan Naturals – King, Medium) and very comfy on first night. Thanks!

Great company and great mattress
When we needed a new mattress (we have a slated bed frame which I wanted to keep) I started looking online at reviews and came across John Ryan by Design. I knew I wanted a pocket sprung & ‘natural’ mattress and not one of the newer chemical laden mattresses in a box. I learnt so much from the John Ryan website and reading the reviews on here gave me the confidence to order from them. I ordered an Artisan Naturals (had narrowed my choice down the this and a more expensive mattress but when I rang the company they told me the Artisan would be more suitable for our needs – bonus!). When the mattress arrived 3 weeks later I tried it out before making the bed and thought it was fine, but after the first night I found it a bit hard (just goes to prove lying on the bed in a showroom will not give you the best idea of how comfortable a mattress will be). I had read that the mattress will settle and so I added a wool topper (which I should have had anyway) and have not looked back. After 5 weeks I am very pleased with the mattress and would highly recommend the company.

Best mattress ever!
My wife and I have been married for over 45 yrs and we can honestly say this is the best mattress we have ever had! We visited many retailers during our extensive search for a new bed but, by far,the most information we received in helping us to make our selection was on the John Ryan web-site. In addition to viewing the site, we were able to speak to staff at John Ryan who were able to provide further information and answer any queries we had. Although we had reservations about buying on-line without even lying on the bed of our choice, any fears we had were allayed by the fact that a ” 60 day love it or return it guarantee” was available. Following guidance we received on mattress suitability using our personal details, we chose an Artisan Naturals Super King Zip and Link bed, Medium. ( we would highly recommend a bed of this size if you can afford it and have the space to accommodate it. Each of the two mattresses can be of different degrees of firmness is so desired, the zip and link mechanism is easy to operate with no obvious join between the mattresses and the bed is much easier to turn as each mattress is turned individually with much less effort needed ). Having ordered the bed,it was supplied withing the timescales indicated and the delivery was well organised on the date agreed with phone calls from the delivery team on the day to advise on the precise delivery time. In summary, we would highly recommend John Ryan-one of the best companies we have dealt with!

Day of ordering, company contacted me to confirm mattress ordered was correct for my needs. Delivered on prearranged date and delivered to my room of choice. All packaging taken off and removed. Excellent and reliable service from start to finish. Mattress is the best one i’ve slept on, so comfy and well made. Would recommend and use again.
