Blended Wool and Cotton features as the top Comfort Layer. This 50% Cotton and 50% Wool mix of a substantial overall weight allows for a deep sink sensation.
This is then followed by generous laters of Horsehair and Horsetail.
This Horsehair layer has shorter and finer fibres acting like millions of tiny springs. The loft of this layer is important as a sub-primary comfort layer. It will take a considerable number of years for this product to lose its recovery properties.
This additional layer of wool acts as a cushion between the two horsehair layers so the compression on the preceding layer of horsetail is separate to the compression on the forthcoming layer of horsehair. The support comes from 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs in a tension of your choice.

Our team will be able to guide you to the right product for you and your budget. We grade the products in our warehouse and the grading is decided based on the condition of the product upon return. All mattresses are Grade B or C. At this stage we cannot give you the history of each product or the very specifics of where any marks may be located so if this is important for you to know then a clearance bed may not be for you and you can choose your mattress in the normal way. We do however guarantee that the condition will be no worse than described below and in most cases is actually better!

I bought from John Ryan because they offer a money back guarantee which is difficult to find on the high street. I ordered a seconds mattress on a Saturday and received a phone call on the Monday to check that the mattress would suit me. The delivery team contacted me a few days later and the mattress was delivered a week later. I can’t fault that process.
The mattress itself (Artisan Luxury King) is super comfortable, soft enough for my body to feel cosseted and perfectly supportive so there are no pressure points anywhere from top to toe (I am 5ft 10in and weigh 73kg). It’s worth the leap of faith. Staff know their product and can answer questions intelligently and with confidence. The You Tube videos were a great help. We had never envisaged buying a bed we had not tried in person but are so pleased that we went ahead. A quality product made and delivered quickly. Our previous mattress was top quality but old and the John Ryan mattress has met our expectations in every way – including just how heavy it is when it comes to the monthly turning! Also the delivery staff deserve a mention (I don’t know if they are direct employed or sub contracted). Friendly, efficient and very careful to ensure not one wall, or anything else, was marked. All in all we highly recommend this firm.

Mattress (Artizan) is brilliant. I have been sleeping better since I had it a bit over a month ago. A bit heavy as they use mostly natural materials but on the plus side I sweat less during the night. It needs two people to rotate or flip it over every month but if someone can help it’s manageable. Very helpful staff. Good communication throughout. But delivery company could plan and manage their day better. Overall, very happy with my purchase so far.

Artisan Luxury Emperor Bespoke 2000 x 2000 Had John Ryan manufacture my bespoke size bed supplied with sprung divan base. Incredibly after 8 years on, It still feels and performs as new. Despite it being described as one of the softest upholstered mattresses, this is quite a firm mattress compared to the Bespoke 004 which we have also bought. I must say that the Bespoke 004 is more comfortable generally, and softer on hips and shoulders when sleeping on your side.

I’m delighted with my gorgeous Artisan mattress, it is luxury indeed. I’d been hankering after one of these for a long time, and was very pleased to find one in the outlet with a very generous 40% discount. Other than having a few slightly dirty marks on one side, which should clean off easily, it appears and feels brand new. It’s been very comfortable from the first night, and I’m sleeping really well. I use a microfibre topper to add a little extra softness, (though it would be soft enough without it) and to make it last as long as possible. I’m so happy to have finally bought one of these beautiful mattresses, it was worth the wait! The customer service and delivery have been faultless. We’ve had our Super King Zip and Link for just over 2 months now and are very happy with it. We chose the Artisan Luxury on advice because I like a soft/medium bed and this provides it. Its comfortable .We’d had our previous bed 25 years and I was apprehensive about changing. Service from John Ryan has been excellent. Lots of advice if you need it to help you choose. After our previous mattress from another company had come to the stage of being very uncomfortable, I spent quite a while reading reviews and comments across the internet for suggestion and experiences.
John Ryan by Design came highly recommended in many places and by many people.
Our main issue was with the firmness of our current mattress after sagging so were looking for a soft mattress, and preferably not another memory foam mattress.
We chose the softest in the range, the Artisan Luxury. I was concerned it may be too soft, but we felt confident with the 60 day guarantee that if it were too soft we could exchange. The materials and quality looked excellent on the website.
When it arrived I was surprised as it was a lot firmer than I anticipated. This could be due to us having a solid base rather than a sprung divan.
We tried persisting with the mattress but sadly our bodies did not adjust and we were not finding it comfortable.
There was no issue with arranging a return, it was handled quickly and with no difficulty.
I can honestly say dealing with John Ryan by Design has been one of the best experiences with buying online. The service before purchasing was excellent, with Gary answering my questions, and on ordering a call to confirm the purchase details and check it was suitable for us.
The quality of the mattress was very high, and the handling of the return was faultless.

My quest to find the perfect mattress has finally ended after three failed trials. I bought the Artisan Luxury as I need a soft loft and optimal temperature regulation. This is the only mattress I have tried that ticks all the boxes. It is responsive, supportive, cool and smells heavenly. All in all a joy to sleep on. My restless nights drenched in sweat are a long distant memory now.

We were a little sceptical of spending such a lot of money on-line without even seeing the mattress. The John Ryan help line is indeed helpful, and the website contains a good deal of useful and interesting information though naturally enough it is loaded towards their own products. The lengthy unconditional returns period eventually swayed us and we bought an Artisan Luxury mattress.
We needn’t have worried. The mattress is all they claimed and we have easily become accustomed to it. It is both soft and supportive and seems well made though only time will tell. After only a week there are noticeable indentations where we lie but again time will tell whether this becomes an issue and there is a good guarantee after the cooling off period. There have been occasional reviews slating delivery problems, however the John Ryan van arrived when they said they would, the delivery men offered to remove their shoes, they delivered the heavy mattress right to our bedframe with no damage and took away both the packaging and our old equally heavy mattress. No fuss, no muss as they say. Full marks.

I ordered my mattress during this ‘lockdown’ period. I had been meaning to do this for ages, the company having been recommended to me by two other buyers. Now I had time to look at all the options and was very pleased to find that I could still talk to someone at length over the phone (Lee Burkhill). He took time to listen to my needs and to ask questions that helped me to make my final choice.
Re the mattress itself, the quality is superb. Comfort-wise I am still ‘breaking it in’ so more on that at a later date.

After a very bad experience with advisors from John Lewis resulting in a bed that escalated my pain levels to intolerable, we fought for a refund and turned to John Ryan. If we had only done our research first and found them before going to John Lewis again!
The advisors at John Ryan listened to all I had to say about my health issues and what I wanted, then guided us towards the best bed for me. And it is! The Artisan Luxury mattress with sprung base is simply wonderful. I have less pain now and going to bed is no longer dreaded, as it was before.

Buying a mattress online is fraught with things that could potentially go very wrong. John Ryan mitigate against this through their in depth knowledge of their sector, praise of their competitors, (love this, so rare) transparency, support, superb website, outstanding product and returns policy
Their service is exemplary – I spoke to them a number of times. They were unfailingly patient, polite, warm and useful – suggesting what to test, where, how to compare their mattress and they guide you to what is right for you. Mattresses are very subjective – they understand.
Suffice to say I’m thrilled with my Artisan Luxury Superking size mattress. The quality matches any I’ve tried inc Savoir. It’s sumptuous and supportive – the upholstery makes for an excellent sleep. I was worried it would be too soft – not so. It’s perfect.
Delivery was efficient too – on time, courteous and they removed my old mattress.

I couldn’t recommend John Ryan highly enough. I was impressed by their very informative website and a fair return policy. This is a company of honest, expert craft-men that love what they do.
I first bought an Origins Pocket 1500. An excellent mattress. After sleeping on it for almost a month, however, I decided I wanted a mattress with a softer feel and more natural fibres. So I called John Ryan and, following their advice, ended up paying the difference for the Artisan Luxury.
I also bought from John Ryan a base + 2 drawers + 2 continental drawers + headboard, originally for the Origins Pocket. Again, great product and service. A minor mistake was made when fixing the headboard, however, which left the continental drawers at the bottom end of the bed. John Ryan was of course ready to rectify this but they didn’t have to, in the end, as we also upgraded the base for the Artisan Luxury.
In all occasions, the helpline was very helpful and friendly, and the delivery was done professionally and in a timely manner.
If you are looking for a new mattress, look no further.

The thought of buying a bed over the internet had not occurred to me, but I found the web-site of this company so full of information that it was clear that here we had some self-confessed “bed nerds”. When I sent a few e-mail enquiries each one was replied to swiftly and helpfully. The same was true of telephone conversations. I was impressed by their patience and the detailed level of the advice that they provided. As we came to refine just which bed we would find most suitable there was no pressure to go for the most expensive of our options; indeed they suggested a cheaper model than originally discussed.
We chose the “Artisan Luxury” Kingsize, medium firmness. The suggestion was that we might like to match this with a Luxury Microfibre topper from “Soak & Sleep”.
Delivery was on time, and the men were polite and efficient. They assembled the bed and took away all packaging.
Both my wife and I have joint and neck injuries (too many years of climbing and skiing!) so bed choice is important. After a few days getting used to the new bed we found that our sleep improved and that we were waking with fewer aches and pains. Wonderful. We have now had the bed about three months and find it blissful!
Importantly, had we not liked the bed, it could be returned without charge during the first 30 days, and a full refund given. This gave us the confidence to order through the internet.
As an aside; we have slept on Vi-Spring and Savoir beds in hotels and it is our opinion that the “Artisan Luxury” bed from John Ryan (together with the topper) provide us with that level of comfort and support but at a very considerably lower price. If we need to replace any other beds we will be back to John Ryan like a shot.
One warning: it is suggested that any mattress be turned/flipped over every three months. These are not light weight mattresses and it does take two people to turn and flip; but we manage! Francis

Very difficult to get out of in the morning, it’s so comfortable.
We have had this bed for approximately 5 months.
Superbly comfortable, very well made it seems, and the delivery was a pain free experience.
We got the zip link which makes it quite easy for us to turn the mattres’s and also reduces disturbance when your partner moves around or get’s out of bed.
