Igel mattress causing discomfort

A customer asked

Six months ago I spent a small fortune on an I-Gel mattress hoping it would help support my bad back, but have slept badly since I got it. I toss and turn all night trying to get comfortable and often wake with a numb arm and my back ache has got worse. I am 5'7 and weigh 9 stone and suffer with chronic lumbar back pain. I am desperate to find a comfortable mattress that is also supportive for my back, so would appreciate your advice, I recently came across the Harrison Zephyr which felt much softer and more comfortable than my current mattress. Do you know if this mattress would suit my needs and if so do you do something of a similar comfort level. Ideally I don't want to spend more than £800 but would spend more if needed.

Hi Sarah,

Thank you for your enquiry.  It is not possible to provide a recommendation or opinion as to the suitability of the Harrisons' product you refer to as they do not publish specific details of the construction and more particularly the upholstery layers used in terms of GSM (grams per square metre). This also prevents making any form of comparison to any of our products or other product on the market. What I have been able to establish is that it is a one sided mattress, which in itself is ok, although this would tend to impact on the longevity of the product because you are unable to use the reverse side to spread the wear of the mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Although it was once advised that you should have a firm mattress for a bad back, that is no longer true.  What is important is that you have the correct support from the springs.  This is based solely on an individuals body weight.  You require a medium spring tension to give you the correct support and the comfort layers are personal preference.  Are you a side sleeper? I only ask as you say you often wake with a numb arm which indicates that your current mattress is too firm in the comfort layers. You have provided you weight details and your budget, however, you have not advised what size mattress you are looking for or how you would like it to feel.  If you want something that you can sink into whilst still having a medium support have a look at our Origins Comfort 1000 or if you would prefer something with the slight sink but not too much of a medium upholstery have a look at our Origins Pocket 1500.
