What a fantastic website!
Hope you can help us - we're looking for a new king size mattress to replace a four year old and totally worn out Silentnight Miracoil 3-Zone Kennington King.
I'm approx 6ft and 10.5 stone, and tend to sleep on my back or left side. I'm a hot sleeper. My wife is 5'6 and approx 14st and she tends to sleep curled up and feels the cold. We both like a firm-ish mattress. One thing we want to avoid is roll-together.
Initially the Silentnight bed was comfortable, but is now very uneven and noisy and we both wake with back pain in the morning. It was bought in a hurry after we moved house 4 years ago. At the time I thought I had ordered a springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring mattress but the description was vague and I now know Miracoil is an open spring design.
I gave my previous bed which we both liked (an 800 pocket spring kingsize made by Sleepeeze from 1999) to my Mother, and that bed is still providing great service. I don't recall the exact model, but it was no longer being made when we came to order a bed for our new house.
We have tried a few mattresses in the local John Lewis. I initially liked their Ortho 1400 best, though the sales staff suggested this is for people of 18st or more. They recommended a Natural Collection Egyptian Cotton 6000 or similar, which we tried and felt ok for the few minutes lying on it in store. However one or two online reviews suggest it can become lumpy over time.
Our budget is approx £1000, and ideally we'd like to reuse the Silentnight divan base unless there's a compelling reason not to.
What would you recommend for us from your range?
Thanks & Kind Regards,
Marc

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your kind words we are glad that our site is proving useful for you.

You’ve unfortunately run into the issue that frequently occurs with open coil mattresses. After a while you inevitably experience roll together and due to the size of the open coils the fillings can settle in a very uneven fashion. Open coil mattresses tend to compress and fail far quicker than their pocket sprung counterparts.

You would be far better off with a mattress-guide/" title="spring">springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring mattress which would enable you to sleep in your own sides without the dreaded roll together.

For the temperature issue a mattress with natural fibres is less likely to cause a build up of heat as they are more breathable. So I’d definitely be looking for this as a must have.

At your weights I’d recommend a medium gauge spring. I appreciate your requirement of a firm mattress but unless you're adamant I really would recommend you try out a medium gauge spring. This is more suited to your weights. You want the spring to react and support you, but if you move to a spring that is too firm, ie designed for 18 stone then the spring is useless and you’re just lying on top of it.

One concern I would have if you chose a firm mattress is you’re going to go from one extreme to the next; A soft sagging open coil to a super robust firm mattress. You need a mattress that will cradle you slightly, neither allowing you to sink so far its uncomfortable or hold you so firmly that your in pain.

I’d recommend you have a look at our Artisan Naturals in a medium gauge spring tension. It contains 3950GSM which 85% are natural, removing the over heating concern compared to memory foam or synthetic fibres. We can of course do this in a firm spring tension but I’d advise you go have a look at the Vispring Regal superb, in a firm spring tension, at a showroom and try this first. I don’t think you require split tensions but if you did want to go down this route for your wife’s side could be firmer that say yours. I wouldn’t initially recommend this though.
