Hi
I am 5 ft 10 and weight 70kg. My wife is 5ft 1 and weighs 60kgs. We want to buy a mattress that is firm and provides good support to our backs. We have been reasonably happy with a £1200 Dreams revitalise and more recently a Warren Evans £300 ideal memory foam mattress. We have a slight preference for the first as it felt more comfortable. Which of your mattresses would you recommend? Our budget is £1000 but can stretch if needed if something is much superior as I do have a very bad back. Also ideally we don't want a mattress that makes us too hot. Both of the current ones sometimes make me sweat. Lastly we have a slated bed but the slates are not too far apart.

Hi Vivek,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is that with your particular body weights, we would not recommend a firm mattress, in fact you both fall within the medium spring tension bracket. With our mattresses, support for the body weight is provided by the spring unit with comfort being provided by the upholstery layers. The issue with your back is likely to be either caused by or aggravated by you having a mattress which is too firm.

We do not make memory foam mattresses and do not recommend these because of the heat retaining properties of that material.

There are several products which we would recommend you consider and they are the Origins Pocket 1500, Artisan Naturals and the Artisan Bespoke 004 . The first two of these products are the best selling products in their ranges as detailed at the foot of this response. The Origins has man made upholstery and all the Artisan models have natural upholstery. The Origins Pocket 1500 has a standard medium tension spring with upholstery which provides an overall medium feel. All of the Artisan models can have the spring tension selected as soft, medium or firm and the Naturals and Bespoke 004 provide the same feel in the upholstery.

All of our pocket sprung mattresses are suitable to be placed on top of a slatted base as long as the gaps between the slats do not exceed 3"". if the gaps are larger than 3" we recommend using a thin piece of (3-5mm) MDF. This will provide a uniform surface upon which the mattress will sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats. Using the MDF will make any mattress placed upon it feel slightly firmer.

We trust that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

kind regards,

Amy.
