New mattress confusion.

Nick

Hi. I have been reading your site and questions for days. I have been out to try mattresses too. I had a stay in Paris on a mattress that had a firmish feel but a slight sinking feeling. I suffer a chronic illness but am in my 30s and illness is a new thing to me. Exhaustion and pain is part of it. I also injured lower my disc in my 20s. So, now I'm 11/half stone and 5ft 10..my other half is 5'3 and around 13/half stone but just very curvy rather than large bellied.
Our bed dips and I no longer sleep. We are buying a hardwood slat french Louis bed in SuperKing size and need a mattress to go with it. I am very aware I cannot afford a £1.500 latex but memory foam too heavy and hot for me. We are looking around 600 and I believe we might need a 1500 pocket as the old open coils in less than 1000 is killing my joints. I was 13stone of muscle as a Tennis player so my muscles are still there but Ive lost size. I get sore muscles. I also like to stretch out and have space but am looking at something I could turn as my partners weight and height mean even with a coolgel topped mattress- I suspect a no turn would find us in a dip within 5 yrs. Can you help ? I love a soft sinking slight feeling but need a turnable mattress too..within my price range.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your enquiry.

When advising upon a new mattress the primary consideration is the body weight(s) of the person(s) using the mattress. This is because this dictates the spring tension required and in your particular case, we would suggest that a medium spring tension/feel mattress is most appropriate.

Given your current budget we would suggest that you view the Origins Pocket 1500, which has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man made upholstery providing an overall medium feel.

John Ryan By Design Origins 1500
1 300gsm Wool
2 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
3 500gsm Polyester Pad
4 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Alternatively, you could view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has the same medium tension spring unit, but has softer man made upholstery layers.

John Ryan By Design Origins Comfort
1 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
2 500gsm Polyester Pad
3 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
4 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

If this mattress is to be used on a slatted base, we would suggest placing a barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF, over the slats to provide the mattress, which is double sided, a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

We trust this helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind regards.
