Origins 1500 vs Loaf Perfect Mattress Firmness Reviewed

Matt

I'm normally a medium or medium-firm with my mattresses, but I recently tried the Loaf Perfect mattress in their showroom and found the Regular (medium) far too soft. Instead, their Firm tension version felt far more comfortable and supportive (Extra Firm was too hard)

I'm considering purchasing the Origins Pocket 1500, but wondered how the firmness of the medium and firm variants could compare to the Firm Loaf mattress?

My partner and I are both around 11 stone and are side sleepers (although I move around a lot), and are getting a King size.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the great question about the Loaf 'Perfect' mattress tension and feel compared to our best selling Origins Pocket 1500 mattress.

You raise a very interesting question and one that a lot of mattress shoppers get wrong at their peril. The question really should be 'Is is the mattress pocket spring or the mattress upholstery that creates the overall feel of the mattress?'.

The answer is simple. The spring gauge should always be dictated by the bodyweight/height of the sleeper whereas the mattress feel or comfort is nearly aways created by the upholstery layers above the pocket spring support unit.

Whilst the spring tension will impact the feel of the mattress to a degree you really don't want to pick any overly firm spring tension. This is because pocket spring tensions are made with weight tolerances in mind.

For example, a medium spring tension (1.4 gauge pocket spring wire) is made for a 9-16 stone sleeper in mind. If you go up to a 1.6 gauge (firm pocket spring) although it may feel more supportive initially for a 2 min test drive in a showroom, the pocket spring is far too firm for you in the long run. The pocket spring won't be 'loading' correctly, in fact, it will offer too much extension (push back) and over time you may end up with a bad back at night.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

Our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is a true medium feel in the upholstery layers and is available either as a 1.4 medium 1500 pocket spring support or a 1.6 2000 firm pocket spring support. We wouldn't advise the firm at your weights of 11 stone as this would be overkill and may lead to back issues over time.

The biggest issue with have with the Load 'Perfect' mattress is that it is one-sided. So you can only ever use one side leading to settlement issues. Have a read here for more on no turn mattresses.
