What do you think of Savoir’s new  Vegan mattress? With fillings of Organic Cotton, Flax, Bamboo, Viscose and some fibre called “Tampico”?

It’s the first time they’ve done a mattress variant with no animal fibre whatsoever.

Hi Albert,

Thanks for getting in touch about mattresses, especially given it is a Savoir which we always love to talk about.

Savoir is undoubtedly one of the best high-end mattress manufacturers on the planet. We've been waxing lyrical about this and their fabulous manufacturer techniques since we started the site over a decade ago so it's nice to see another new model from them.

What are a little bit disappointed, or thrilled depending on the mood of the day, that we used to be the UK's only 100% plant based mattress manufacturer and now Savoir has joined us! (Deep down we are happy to be with them rather than on our own!). We launched our vegan 100% plant-based mattress 18 months ago.

Anyway, competitive friendliness aside let's help answer your question.

Is the Savoir No4 Vegan Mattress worth the price?

Savoir's mattresses are painstakingly hand made using the finest fibres. It's what they are known for. The Savoir No4 takes 30 hours to make using some beautiful old fashioned methods, such as Diamond-threaded, hand-stitched cotton webbing used to interlink the hourglass springs in their divans.

The No4 from Savoir is made up of a sprung bed frame, mattress and topper. Giving three components that make up its support and comfort layers. It's a two sided mattress from what we can see and we believe the topper is turnable too. Giving you multiple sides to sleep on and even out settlement.

The Savoir No4 Contains:

  • Organic flax and cotton
  • Bamboo
  • Viscose
  • Tampico

The biggest niggle is Savoir used to give the order of the layers and their GSM (grams per square meter) so you could compare. However, they have stopped doing this, probably because most retailers don't. We still disclose all of the weights and orders of our layers to help consumers compare and contrast.

With those layers it will have a rather forgiving feel in the comfort or upholstery layers. It certainly isn't a firm feel mattress. The sprung divan will give it quite a forgiving feel.

As the price is not disclosed on their site it's hard to give an accurate cost. Given that Savoir's mattresses start around £9k utp £155k it gives you an idea of the luxury price point you're buying into.

Now onto the question about Tampico.

What is Tampico?

Tampico is a natural fibre from the Agave plant from northern Mexico. It, like most natural plant fibres, is very resilient and can be stripped and shredded to create a soft tough fibre. We liken it to either flax, hemp or bamboo in its feel. It's not often used in mattress manufacture because there is low demand, remember there are only us and Savoir making 100% plant fibre mattresses here in the UK and also the processing to turn it into a fibre is quite expensive.

Given Tampico is usually used in a more raw (less processed) state for brushes and bristles converting it onto a lighter fibre, when there is low demand, is expensive given its rarity for this purpose. I would expect as demand rises the price will become more economical.

We don't use Tampico in our Artisan Latex Vegan mattress but use Talalay Latex instead.

Artisan Latex Vegan Mattress:

As a comparison to the Savoir No4 take a look at our 100% natural 2 sided handmade Artisan Latex. It has a medium feel in the top upholstery layers.
