Hello there - we're about to replace a 20 year old pocket sprung mattress. Just came across your website and wondered what your opinion is on the hybrid mattresses available now - eg the Premium Hybrid by Eve which gets a Which Best Buy recommendation?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for getting in touch about Hybrid mattresses such as Eve.

If you've been used to a pocket spring mattress then moving to a synthetic foam based one-sided mattress can be a bit of a shock. So let's take a look at some of the 'features' of these hybrid mattresses and what they may mean for you.

Hybrid mattress features:

  1. One sided
  2. One size fits all
  3. Next Gen Foam
  4. Boxed & Rolled

Now let's look a bit closer at each of these features to see how suitable they may be for you Richard given you've always had a more traditional pocket sprung mattress like the hand made beds we make.

1.One Sided Mattresses Uncovered

One sided mattresses such as Eve, Simba and Leesa should always be taken with a pinch of salt. Just because you can't turn it does not mean that it's a benefit to you. It may save you ten mins each month in mattress maintenance but ultimately a one sided mattress is a drawback to you as a new bed purchaser.

This is because one sided or no turn mattresses do settle at an alarming rate. Given you can't flip and turn them to 'even' out this settlement it can lead to dips and sags which then make the mattress pretty much useless in some cases. This is a similar issue with pillowtop mattresses that you can read about on our site as well. Stay well clear of these Richard!

2. One Size Fits All Mattresses

The next issue is that these boxed mattresses such as Eve, Nectar, Emma etc all use one fixed spring or foam tension. There is no option or preference to take into account your bodyweight or sleeping position. Making this one size fits all models. The biggest drawback is that you're having to accommodate the mattress rather than the mattress being made to accommodate you.

With a traditional pocket spring mattress, you can choose the spring tension that best meets your bodyweight and then comfort layers (ie upholstery) to match your sleeping position/preferences. Boxed mattresses can never provide either of these adjustments for you.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

3. Next Gen Mattress Foams & Memory foams

Most of these boxed mattresses such as Eve and Emma market themselves as having next-gen pressure reliving foam to support and comfort you during the night. The thing that none of these companies point out is that this memory foam 'hybrid' still relies on heat to mould. This means they retain heat and can be unbearable for some sleepers as they are the least breathable of materials.

Imagine a synthetic foam pillow versus a natural fibre or cotton pillow. The difference is staggering.

Also, these foams are synthetic and man-made usually by pouring a chemical soup onto a conveyor to create these layers of foam. Compare that to a natural fibre mattress which is both breathable and long-lasting and there's very little comparison. Sometimes 'next gen' really isn't as futuristic or beneficial as traditional!

4. Boxed Mattress Issues

Lastly nearly all of these mattresses are crushed, rolled and then boxed. We've written extensively about the damage this causes and how its no benefit to you the sleeper but more the companies selling them in reducing their delivery costs. We would urge you to read this article here on boxed mattresses to understand more about the harm that's done to a bed when its rolled.

What's the alternative to the Eve & Emma mattress?

If you're looking at buying an Eve or Emma mattress then the best alternative in a traditional pocket spring model is our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress.

Our Origins Pocket 1500 mattress is a true medium feel in the upholstery layers and is available either as a 1.4 medium 1500 pocket spring support or a 1.6 2000 firm pocket spring support depending on your bodyweight. It's also available as a zip and link bed to further reduce transference or if you have access issues.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress
1: 300GSM WOOL
2: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER
3: 500GSM POLYESTER PAD
4: ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER
5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS
TOTAL: 1550GSM
