Best Matress Type
Post TLIF Spinal operation. What is the best mattress to buy.
Michael,
Thank you for your question. The advice used to be that anyone who suffered from any type of back problem required a firm or orthopaedic mattress. However, this is not the case. The correct level of support is essential to keep your spine aligned, along with the level of comfort based on your sleep positions. The tension of the springs is dictated by your height and body weight.
| Bodyweight | Spring tension |
|---|---|
| Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
| 16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
| Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
The upholstery layers on top of the springs determine how the mattress feels. Your sleep positions and how you like a mattress to feel, will dictate which comfort layers would be the most suitable. For example, we do not recommend firm upholstery layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees. Likewise, if the upholstery is too soft for a front or back sleeper, you can sink in too much, which can put pressure on your lower spine.

Foam-type mattresses, like memory foam, provide a moulding sensation compared to the cushioning feel of upholstery fibres. This type of mattress can relieve pressure by contouring to the unique shape of your body, distributing weight evenly across the surface, which can help alleviate pressure point pain for some, particularly in areas like the shoulders, hips, and lower back. However, as memory foam requires body heat to be able to mould to you, it retains this heat, which can make many sleepers overheat. Natural latex will provide the same moulding feel but is much more breathable and responsive, making it easier to turn over during the night.

You should also consider the mattress your body has become used to, what you don't like about it and what you did like when you first got it.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
