Advice on John Ryan Mattresses and Vi spring Mattresses

I research things to the nth degree and in my mattress search, I've even visited two factories. I'm after a two sided version with natural fillings. I've been round most of the sheds and independent outlets and have concluded few willingly discuss how different bases affect the matts performance and even fewer will move the matt of choice around different bases for comparison.

Manufacturers bang on alarmingly about the wool/cotton/ cashmere/horse hair/coir etc layers but I'm thinking they are forgetting that in my view its the internal springing that makes the difference. I've tried a lot of different upper end makes and although they feel 'OK' , and stuffed to the nines, it ends up springs-through-mattress/" class="" >feeling like I'm on a futon with no real connection to the spring system. I would say so far only Vi-spring matts feel as though there is a spring system supporting you [ as well as all the fancy layers] and I believe they make their own springs. I 've been fortunate to find an outlet with a vast choice of 'decent' makes for easy comparison and I certainly think there is a noticeable difference of Vi spring to other springing systems

Two questions for you:

You like to compare with VS but I'm assuming your matts use bought in spring systems so how confident are you of emulating the Vi spring 'feel' ?

I note your on line presence but do have an outlet or somesuch where your products can be seen and tried?

Thanks again and I really enjoy your informative articles

Hi David,

Thank you for your question.

First and foremost, although our mattresses do have a similar feel to Vi Spring mattresses they are not a direct comparison.

The springs/" class="" >spring units used in our Artisan range of mattresses are made for us and are not a bought in system.   They are made of vanadium steel and then put into calico pockets.  Calico pocket springs are he highest quality springs you can get in a mattress. All the high-end manufacturers, such as Savoir beds, Vi-spring will use calico pocket springs in their top end ranges. Calico pocket springs provide more flexibility than the synthetic spun bond counterparts meaning the springs can flex easily and breath more than cheaper pocket sprung units. The calico pocket springs are sewn together and are only attached to adjacent springs with lengths of twine stringing them together. This is always done by hand by a skilled craftsman.

Our Artisan Range of mattresses, like Vi Spring, use natural fillings which are breathable and provide the coolest sleeping surfaces.   When choosing a mattress, the spring tension is obviously very important as it is the springs that give the support.  We base our spring tension on body weight which ensures that you do receive the right amount of support.  The fillings which are on top of the springs provide the comfort and so it is very important to get both right for the customer.

We are an Online Company and do not have any stores etc as we feel that trying a mattress for a few minutes in a store does not give you the correct feel from the top layers, as you need to sleep on the mattress for a good 7 - 8 hours in order to know that the mattress is right for you.

If we can assist you with regard to any of our mattresses, why not give us a ring and speak to one of our customer service team on 0161 437 4419, who can recommend a mattress which will suit your needs.  As referred to above, we do need to know what your body weights are together with heights and preferred feel.

Kind regards Julie
