Alternative mattress which has heat reflecting properties
About three years ago we purchased an Artisan 1500 medium after quite an exchange of correspondence to get it right. We liked your website and customer service which is why I’m writing to say we didn’t get it right. After a couple of weeks I wrote to say in retrospect we should have gone for something harder as the mattress seemed lumpy and you kindly offered an exchange. After all my research and the upheaval of delivery I didn’t take you up on the offer hoping I’d get used to it. It has a cashmere layer and it seems to reflect the heat so we are hot all year round , far too hot in the summer and I’ve never liked the tufts which can be felt through the cotton mattress protector and bottom sheet.
Have you any suggestions. Do you make anything cool to go on a slatted bed base preferably with a flat
Surface that doesn’t have lumps. I’m 9 stone and lie on my side and my husband is 15 stone and sleeps on his back.
Dear Sheila,
Thank you for your enquiry. Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your Artisan 1500. All of our pocket sprung mattresses are fine to go on a slatted base as long as the space between the slats is 3 inches or less. If the gap is greater than 3 inches we recommend boarding the base with a cheap piece of MDF or plywood. Ths is because the springs will settle into the gaps giving a lumpy feel to the mattress, you don't get the correct support and over time this will damage the mattress. All or foam based mattresses require a platform base, Just as they contour to your body they also mould around the slats causing a lumpy feel and damage to the mattress.
Tufting is an essential component of a pocket sprung mattress. This is what holds all the upholstery layers in place and all of our natural fibre mattresses have to be tufted because there is so much that goes into the comfort layers. The only pocket sprung mattress that may be suitable is the Origins Pocket Latex 1500.
This is a flat top, one-sided mattress. Latex is not as heat retentive ( a lot cooler sleep surface) as memory foam and is a lot more responsive, but it does have a unique feel and we would always advise trying a latex mattress in a showroom just to see if you like the feel of it. It would feel very firm for you at your body weight and a medium for your husband at his body weight. The other alternative would be a solid latex mattress such as our Fusion range but you would have to board your slatted base over.
