A customer asked

I think tufting looks very uncomfortable and feel that quilting might be smoother to lie on, but am I right?

Does one actually feel the relatively large undulations in a tufted mattress when one lies on it?

Hi Lily,

You are right to consider how the surface finish affects comfort, as tufting and quilting do offer quite different feels. It is difficult to say definitively whether you would feel them, as comfort is very subjective. What one person feels another doesn't. Some people are a lot more sensitive to tufting than others.

Mattress tufts and tools

While the tufts create distinct visual dips and undulations, you generally do not feel them as hard lumps or uncomfortable bumps when lying on the mattress. Tufting is essential to any pocket sprung mattress to secure the deep internal upholstery layers together; the tufts are held in place with soft felt rosettes or straps. You can read more about tufting here. When you lie down, your body weight is distributed across the mattress surface, softening those initial surface contours. If you are used to a flat sleep surface with your current mattress, the dips will be more noticeable to you than to someone used to a traditional pocket sprung mattress. The feel of the dips will diminish over time as the upholstery layers settle and flatten out. Adding a mattress topper or spare duvet under your sheet will help to even out the sleep surface.

Our pocket sprung ranges are Origins and Artisan. Our Artisan range differs from Origins as they are constructed using natural fillings, and these fillings give a cool sleep surface, help you regulate your body temperature and are more durable than synthetic fibres. Our in-depth article here explains about natural fibres. Anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper would be guided to the Artisan range. If you would prefer a two-sided pocket sprung mattress with a completely smooth surface and a quilted finish, our redesigned Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 may well be the better option for your personal preference. This mattress has a firmer medium overall level of comfort in the upholstery layers.

Non tufted mattress

Quilted mattresses do provide a flatter, smoother top layer, which can feel visually and physically sleeker. However, tufting is typically used on high-end, deeply filled mattresses to prevent the natural upholstery fillings from shifting or bunching over time. Most mattresses with a flat sleep surface usually contain memory foam. You can read about memory foam here. We have our Origins Latex range, with either a softer medium, medium or firmer medium level of comfort. These mattresses are great for pressure relief and have a similar sink-in sensation to memory foam but without the heat issues associated. The additional benefit here is that these ranges don't have tufts on the top surface, so if you're looking at avoiding tufts, these might be an ideal solution.

We would need to know your body weights as well as your preferred feel in the top layers in order to discuss suitable models, but you can browse all of the models in our ranges from the links tagged in this article.

I hope this has answered your queries fully, but if you do have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
