Lower back pain. I need correct mattress

A customer asked

Hi Guys, Firstly I just wanted to say thank you for all the information you provide to often bewildered consumers helping them decide what mattress to buy.

If only I had seen your website before buying my current mattress I probably wouldn't be in the position I am now with constant lower back pain.

I've literally spent the last few days solid trying to choose a replacement and unfortunately I'm nowhere nearer to making a decision.

Here's my details with the criteria: I'm 6ft tall and weigh 12 stone and have constant pains in my lower back.

My current mattress sits on top of a slatted base (not sprung) which I do not intend to change.

I have approx.

£1000 to spend on a mattress that will be long lasting and provide adequate support for my back.

If it helps my existing mattress is a Silentnight miracoil 3 which is less than 2 years old and has seen better days.

It appears the general consensus online for someone who suffers with back pain is to get a pocket sprung memory foam mattress, so after reading the which best buy guide I was considering the Relyon pocket memory classic and would be interested to hear your thoughts on them.

I was also looking at the Vi Spring Traditional Bedstead but read your comments about them being too soft for someone of my size and weight which has put me off.

Please can you comment on the mattresses above and maybe offer some suggestions that fit my criteria.

Many thanks in advance, Richard.

2013/02/28 at 22:13 Just to add to the above options I am also considering the Sleepeezee Backcare Ultimate 2000 and the Hypnos Evesham, appreciate both are well within my budget but both come with a 5 year guarantee and get excellent reviews on several websites for individuals suffering with back pain who prefer a firmer feel.

I would be interested to hear your opinions on these mattresses also.

Regards, Richard.

Hi Richard.

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  The models you mention above vary in price (between £400 and £600) and construction (either memory foam or polyester). If your budget is around the £1000 mark then you should be looking at what is available for this price range. There are well over 4000 different mattress models out there and unless you tailor your search specifically to your parameters and requirements you will be a very old, man indeed before you find what you are after.

Looking at the models you mention it seems you are basing your selections on the firmer models.  If you are doing this based on the feel of your current mattress then that is the completely wrong way of doing it. Your bodyweight at 12st would require a medium spring tension to give you the correct amount of support.  Your back pain could be exacerbated by your current mattress, incorrect spring tension can cause back pain.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The advice used to be if you had any type of back problems you should get a firmer mattress but that is no longer the case.  You need the correct spring tension for your body weight and the upholstery is then based on your personal preferences and sleeping habits.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Origins Pocket spring 1500 mattress

Our Origins Pocket 1500 knocks socks off all the models you mentioned and the Origins Pocket Latex 1500 will be perfect for you if you prefer the firmer feel. And, if your budget can really go to higher, then our Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000 although without knowing what model size you are looking for I don't know if this is within you £1000 budget.

We detail all of our specifications listed on the appropriate page and you can use these as a starting point for you to search out comparable models. You may find that you will have to contact the manufacturers directly to get an equal level of detail, but without that, you will be unable to do like for like comparisons.

I hope this was helpful and if you would like to discuss the suitability of any of our models please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419. Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
