Chris McLeod

Hello,

We purchased a Hypnos Orthocare firm mattress and we are finding the plastic rings that hold the tuffs in place uncomfortable.

When pressing on the tuffs they seem okay but when sleeping they can feel so hard and uncomfortable We have always had a turfed mattress and had no issues before.

I see you have mattress toppers and would appreciate your advice as to whether this would solve the problem.

Thank you.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch about your uncomfortable Hypnos Orthocare mattress. It's not nice when you can't sleep due to discomfort so hopefully, we can give you some advice to make it more bearable.

A very small percentage of people don't get on with tufted mattresses as they are sensitive to the depressions where the tufts are. Tufts are found on higher-end mattresses as they are used to ensure the mattress upholstery fillings all stay consistent in the comfort layers of the mattress. Mattress tufting also compresses the bed to give it a more uniform and plump feeling. Without tufts then fibres would migrate and move around.

Secondly, the bed would be huge in high-end mattresses. As there are so many fillings, compressing and tufting the mattress is necessary to control the loft of the fibres. You can read more on why mattresses are tufted here.

Hypnos Orthocare Mattresses Reviewed:

Firstly we need to double-check the suitability of the mattress for you before we totally blame the tufts. Ideally, we would need to know your body weight and height to fully advice. However, if you're under 16 stone it may be that this mattress is simply far to firm for you which is why you're feeling the tufts. Whilst a mattress topper will help soften this, it's not going to correct an unsuitable spring tension and upholstery layer completely.

The Hypnos Orthocare is an incredible firm and solid mattress. It is marketed for the orthopaedic mattress range, which is a small percentage of customers who like an incredibly firm and unforgiving mattress. Orthopaedic are often mis-sold for sleepers who suffer from bad backs or back issues. More often than not these types of super solid mattresses make bad backs worse. You can read more on why orthopaedic mattresses are bad for bad backs here. In summary, they fail to offer enough comfort for sleepers with a bad back to their limited firm fillings.

Let's have a look at the detail on this bed a little further:

  • 8 turn ReActive Spring System - The more active turns in a single continuous pocket spring the greater its ability to sense the exact comfort and support requirement of you and your partner. A single continuous pocket spring also creates a ‘bellow-like’ affect that drives cool air around the mattress and facilitates greater hygiene. This extra breathability ensures better ventilation, helping to reduce moisture and maintain a comfortable body temperature for a healthy, relaxing and energising night’s sleep.
  • 3 Zoned Support - Enjoy head-to-toe zonal support to provide total spinal and body support. The mattress is firmer in areas where greater support is needed, such as the lumber region and softer in other areas, surrounding the hips and shoulders.
  • British Wool Layer - Wool is used in this mattress as a soft and insulating upholstery layer for added comfort. Wool is a natural insulator providing coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. Offering superb comfort, it also has hydroscopic properties encouraging the evaporation of body moisture.
  • Silk Layer - Finest silk fibres are blended into a durable insulation layer inside the mattress, providing a luxurious and supportive feel.
  • eOlus™ Layer - A sustainable raw material re-using discarded polymer-based bottles which helps conserve natural resources, decreases the use of landfill sites and reduces pollution.
  • Silver Protection is an anti-bacterial protection.
  • Belgian damask
  • 2 Rows Hand side-stitching - Traditional hand-side stitching which secures the outer springs to the border at the top and bottom preventing roll-out. The effects on the mattress are quite dramatic preventing the springs from distorting and extending the sleeping area right up to the edge of the bed to make the borders and edges stronger.
  • Hand-Tufted

Hypnos Pocket Springs:

In terms of the detail above there's no mention of the spring gauge or tension which is linked to a sleepers bodyweight. Without knowing this you really are just guessing as to whether or not this mattress is suitable for your bodyweight.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

All pocket springs are far better than open coil springs or memory foam so that's a good thing. Again with the 3 zoned support, it may be that this additional 'zoned support is simply too great for your needs. Without Hypnos explaining exactly where down the mattress this starts it is really hard to advise on an exacting solution.

Hypnos Mattress Upholstery:

Wool is a brilliant natural fibre for a mattress. It's high wicking and resilient. It's also a very soft fibre so needs other supporting fibres to keep its loft and comfort. We note that it is listed as being layered on top of silk. Silk again is an incredibly soft fibre, we think the listing must be incorrect in stating silk is a support layer. Silk has practically zero supportive properties, it is a soft-top comfort layer fibre.

We believe the main ultra-firm support is coming from the spring unit and then the eOlus layer of recycled plastic bottles/polyester fibre. It's great that they are recycling plastic bottles but this layer will be a synthetic and very firm layer. Compared to wool is will have reduced breathability and less moisture-wicking abilities. Given its right on top of the pocket spring unit, it may negate some of their breathability benefits.

Upholstery Layer Fibre Type How it will feel?
Polyester Synthetic Soft
White Fibre Synthetic Soft/Medium
Recycled Fibre / Eco Fibre Synthetic Medium
Memory Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Igel / Hybrid Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Polycotton Synthetic/Natural Blend Soft/Medium
Linen Synthetic/Natural Blend Medium
Wool (Pure) Natural Soft/Medium
Cotton (Pure) Natural Soft
Silk Natural Soft
Horsehair Natural Medium
Mohair Natural Medium/Firm
Hemp Natural Medium
Latex (100% Natural) Natural Medium/Firm
Coir Natural Firm
Flax Natural Firm
Coarse Cashmere Natural Firm
Bamboo Natural Super Soft
Horsetail Natural Firm
Alpaca Natural Soft
Cashmere (Pure) Natural Soft
Vicuna Natural Super Soft

It's nice to see its hand side stitched which is a good touch. However, this is a one-sided mattress meaning you can't turn it or even out natural settlement. In our experience, most one-sided mattresses have a far reduced lifespan when compared to a comparable two-sided model.

Will a topper remove the feel of tufts?:

A topper will certainly help even out the feel of the top layer of the mattress. We would advise at least a 5cm deep or deeper topper to help act as a bridge over the firmer fibres to provide some relief during the night. We would advise you to check the mattress spring tension and if incorrect see if Hypnos can do an exchange for a more suitable model.
Have a look at our 100% Natural Latex Topper as a starter for ten. If that's out of your budget then some significant micro fibre toppers layered on top of each other may help.
