A customer asked

Hi - first of all many thanks for all the valuable information on your website. A fantastic resource when looking for a new mattress and I will certainly be advising other people to look at it when looking for a new bed!

With regards to my question I would like to know what your opinion is of the 'Geltex' products currently being offered by Silentnight in the UK. Would you equate this mattress to a memory foam topped product?

Specifically I was looking at the Silentnight Geltex Affinity 1850 and would like to know how you believe it would compare quality wise to your own Origins Pocket 1500, both of which fall within the same budget for a King Size. I am approx 17 stone and my wife is 8 stone so I'm aware there will need to be some compromise required!

I'm looking to make a purchase within the next few days and have currently narrowed it down to these two so your advice would be much valued!

Many Thanks. Many Thanks

Hi Peter,

Many thanks for your kind words on our website. Geltex is a relatively new hybrid foam of sorts. To truly answer we would need to know the density and composition of Geltex, but as we usually find the manufacturers don't disclose whats in geltex making like for like comparisons really difficult.

We have a fully detailed post here on Geltex to discuss in more detail with everything we've been able to ascertain from the suppliers, which isn't much!!

The issue with the Silentnight Geltex Affinity 1850 mattress is it contains a pillow top. That means that this pillow top is permanently stitched to the mattress which makes it a no turn mattress. Once the pillow top compresses which it usually does over time you're then stuck with it, ie you can't replace the pillowtop. I'd recommend looking for a mattress with a removable turnable topper, like our Fusion or Hybrid range. This means that if the topper needs replacing for whatever reason you can without needing to replace the entire mattress.

It's worthwhile you considering this if you're looking at pillow topped mattresses. You're going to struggle I'm afraid due to the weight difference between you and your wife. It will either mean compromising on a softer mattress for you or a firmer mattress for her.

We believe maybe matching a softer comfort layer with a more medium support unit could be the compromise. In relation to comparing them, I'd say the Origins 1500 is a two sided mattress which would be a soft tension for your bodyweight and a medium to firm for your wife. The geltex is only a one-sided mattress.

The Origins 1500 also features some natural fibres such as wool in the top layers which the geltex doesn't. I think that a possible option would be to couple up a hybrid foam topper such as laygel with one of the traditional ranges such as the Origins 1500 which will give that soft comfort layer which may soften the mattress slightly for your wife whilst still giving you support.

Thanks - Lee
