Can foam mattresses release toxic chemicals

shazia asked
28th October 2019

Dear Sir/Madam

I am thinking of purchasing a new mattress. My current one is a pocket sprung mattress. I was looking at foam/sprung hybrid like the Igel Pegasus sold in Bensons for Beds. I know you do something similar at JohnRyan. Which range would be best to compare with?
I would also like to understand whether foam is safe or can it release toxic chemicals? I am concerned as I have never purchased foam mattress before and there are many article in the news suggesting cancer causing chemicals and respiratory problems that can be caused by foam bed.

I look forward to your expertise.

Many Thanks

Shazia

Hi Shazia,

Thank you for your question.

Any mattress that is made of foam can produce certain chemicals and off gassing.  These foams are made from a plethora of synthetic compounds and chemicals which in the minute amounts present are classed as harmless. However, the amounts used in foams are very low in some cases which obviously reduces the risk. A number of the online claims give no reference to the percentage or volume of the chemicals used in foam production, which really are needed to make a fair assessment.  Unfortunately most Manufacturers do not disclose the amounts of fillings or other information relating to their mattresses, as they say this is a trade secret.  I have linked in here an article from our website which will provide you with further information.

As you are concerned about chemicals in mattresses, you may be better with a mattress that contains 100% natural fillings/fibres which our Artisan Range and Fusion Range do contain.   The mattresses in the Artisan Range are traditional pocket sprung and have different feels from the top upholstery fillings. The Fusion Range are made of 100% natural Latex which give a similar feel to a foam mattress in that you will sink into the top layers and they will mold to your body shape but are much more breathable than a foam mattress.

It would be better for you to telephone our office on 0161 437 4419 in order to provide us with body weights, heights and preferred feel, which will then enable us to recommend the correct mattress for your needs.

Kind regards
Julie
