Help with a mattress for chronic back pain

Nicola McPhee asked
27th November 2015

I suffer from myofascial pain syndrome, a fancy name for damaged muscles in the back, I have painful trigger points in my shoulder, neck and lower back. We bought a bed last year from Bensons with a latex topper on it and sadly it makes my lower back pain much worse after a night sleeping in it, so it has been moved to the spare room. I am extremely wary about investing in another mattress as we are still paying for that one!! and do not know which type of mattress to choose, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I weigh 9 stone and my husband weighs 13 stone. We recently went on holiday and the bed seemed much better for me, it was 80% / 20 % ratio of Natural Latex. I am desperate for some advice on a mattress that will help me to sleep and not wake up feeling 100 years old. Thank you in advance
Nicky

Hi Nicola,

Thanks for your question.

We’re sorry to hear you’re suffering with your mattress and a bad back.  It’s horrible when you think you’ve found a fix to your sleeping problem to only find out your expensive purchase is making things worse!  Hopefully, some advice will help you avoid this in the future.

Latex mattresses are fantastic at being responsive and offering pressure relief.  Usually, this means for issues like yours and trigger points latex can happily accommodate you in a comfortable sleeping position compared to a less responsive material such as memory foam.

You’ve mentioned the latex pillow top which we always advise against.  What tends to happen is a pillow top at first is great but as soon as it compresses which all fibres will do, you’re sometimes stuck with a misshapen and uncomfortable mattress.  Latex works best as a consistent piece and in a solid core form it offers the best in offering a softer sink top layer with support.  It sounds like you’ve only experienced a thin layer of latex before being stuck with an uncomfortable sprung mattress underneath.  So it sounds like you’ve only felt a tiny portion of the true benefits of latex.

At your weight, you’d be looking at a soft spring tension or medium 70kg latex.  I’d hazard a guess your mattress is too firm given the issues.  Your partner would be a medium spring or 70kg medium latex.

Have a look at our Fusion 3 latex mattress which i s a medium feel and has the benefit of a removable 100% natural latex topper and a solid core base.  This offers unrivalled progressive comfort without hard spots or being overly firm.  It allows you to sink into a position you are comfortable with and then cradles you there.  If you need to move they are incredible fast to respond and allow you to move, wiggle or jiggle freely throughout the night.
