The use of Rebound Poly-Cotton (RPC) and polyester provides this model with a medium to firm feel with a huge amount of upholstery for both comfort and support. This combination contributes greatly towards the overall feel and longevity of the mattress providing loft & resilience.
The final layer of 500 gsm Wool is a premium product used to boost the overall quality of this mattress. More weight could have been gained by using polyester but this usage would deteriorate the overall value. Meaning that the final Comfort Layer of this mattress is 100% Wool for both breathability and softness.
The springs are the component which enabled us to build to a specific price point. Same spring material as used in the Calico units – just the housing is different to keep the Artisan 1500 at this competitive price point. They are available in 3 different spring tensions depending on your body weight and height.
The upholstery quantity and quality is among the best you can get for this budget. There is a massive combined upholstery weight of 4300 GSM of which 53% are Natural Fibres.

We have used as best we can a similar range of components to The Naturals in order to garner the closest match in terms of support and comfort levels. For example; The insulating layer (1200 gsm Cashmere) is the same weight and similar in overall quality and feel to the Mohair as used in The Naturals – this is the most expensive component in this mattress – but critical to achieve the correct support and comfort properties.

No, and no showroom or retailer sells our products. Sadly, such staff probably wouldn’t understand mattress manufacture to the extent that they could reliably answer your questions. Our team will be able to guide you to the right product for you and your budget. We grade the products in our warehouse and the grading is decided based on the condition of the product upon return. All mattresses are Grade B or C. At this stage we cannot give you the history of each product or the very specifics of where any marks may be located so if this is important for you to know then a clearance bed may not be for you and you can choose your mattress in the normal way. We do however guarantee that the condition will be no worse than described below and in most cases is actually better!

Very helpful company
Our second mattress from John Ryan. The delivery men were so polite, careful and efficient and even helped put a mattress protector on the new mattress after it was unpacked – it would have taken me ages if I had had to do it alone ( sort that zips up all the way round). All packaging was taken away with the old mattress. Very pleased with the new mattress.

Went with Artisan 1500, which was made relatively quickly, delivery company was also very accommodating and they offer recycling of old mattresses, so all went smoothly, lets hope that our mattress will last for many many years to come 🙂

After purchasing a Simba and then sending it back we looked for an alternative mattress. Came across John Ryan by Design by chance. What a really great find they are!
It was nice to purchase from a local company and support a British business.
In the end after some great advice from them we settled on a Artisan 1500 Mattress – King Size Zip & Link, Medium. We knew it was going to be firm and its what we wanted and expected but the addition of a Woolroom mattress topper (John Ryan advice) has made it perfect.
Very minor criticism – The mattress has hand holds to manoeuvre along each side but there are none at the head and foot – we think this would be a useful addition particularly on the larger mattress sizes.
Overall the customer service from them was brilliant. Once they advise your mattress is ready, they ask you to contact their delivery team to arrange a convenient delivery date – do this as soon as you can as the delivery date can be a couple of weeks away as they tend to deliver to a number of addresses in a specific area.
Communication from John Ryan and the delivery team was first class.
Overall we found them to be excellent, loved their product and would very highly recommend and would definitely order from them again.

My new Artisan 1500 (double/medium) is simply wonderful to sleep on and provides just the right level of firmness that I was looking (feeling) for, to replace my previous Vispring Regal Supreme. The Artisan Bespoke 004 that I originally ordered and received was also wonderful but I realised after sleeping on it for 30 days that my partner and I needed something a little firmer. It was no fault of the Bespoke 004, which was superb, it’s just that I only really knew that I needed a slightly firmer mattress – and having recently had a hip replacement – after having slept on the Artisan Bespoke 004 for a month. Gary’s unfailing patience and clarity in his advice to change to an Artisan 1500 was spot on. The quality of the mattress aside – the Artisan 1500 is so well made and comfortable – ordering, delivery and advice throughout was seamless. Ordered an Artisan 1500 Single, Medium firmness. Quality of the mattress is excellent. It is firm but very thick, with enough give that it never feels stiff or uncomfortable. Used with a wool protector, the top layer is breathable and stays cool, unlike memory foam. Manufacture and delivery took about 3 weeks. Received a phone call after ordering to confirm that the mattress was suitable. Very happy with my order.

We have had our mattress for about a month now and are very happy with it and the overall buying experience.
We needed to replace a very ancient uncomfortable mattress and whilst researching a replacement I found the information available (or lack of it) from different vendors about their mattresses pretty confusing. The whole market seems to be a minefield for the purchaser.
The John Ryan website was really helpful in explaining mattress construction and quality and after a lot of internet trawling and thinking about the kind of mattress we needed we decided to purchase from them.
Communication throughout the purchase process was excellent and it was delivered on time with no bother at all. The mattress is extremely sturdy and well made. it is very heavy so recommend getting the delivery guys to take it upstairs for you, which they were more than happy to do. I paid the additional charge to have the old mattress removed, which again was sorted by the delivery guys no problem.
Basically this mattress is a million miles away in terms of quality and construction from the ‘mattress in a box’ we were initially thought we were interested in buying.
I would definitely recommend this company.

This is my third mattress in 5 years and I think I’ve found our perfect fit. Yes, I’ve bought the mail order memory foam kak and suffered. I’ve also bout from the popular high street shops, only to find, what you try in store is NOT what you get.
Third time lucky, bit the bullet, spent the extra quid and John Ryan by Design has surpassed our expectations. The quality is phenomenal. Truly. And by gosh its comfortable.
The advice given was spot on. We got a call a few days in, after placing an order on their site. We picked firm (as our last mattress sunk and killed my back) but was told medium will be correct due to our body weight and type of sleep positions. I was hesitant but took the advice by John Ryan. We were buying our first new bed for over a decade, and for the first time were able to afford something more than the most basic of mattresses. The team at John Ryan were beyond helpful, talking us through every step of the selection process and recommending the bed that was right for us (not the most expensive thing they offer, as we’d experienced on the high street). When the bed was delivered and the base wouldn’t fit up our narrow staircase, they fixed the problem without a fuss and at a ridiculously reasonable price.

I waited over a month to post this review, and can confidently say I’ve never slept in a more comfortable bed. The fact that it can be flipped both ways (top to bottom and head to foot) gives me confidence that it’ll remain comfortable for years.

This isn’t cheap, but it’s no more expensive than a bed from one of the big brands, with the added bonus that it’s properly well-made with identifiable, natural materials that breathe (no plastic here).

Thank you John Ryan for delivery of new bed, headboard and mattress. Excellent, professional service from start to finish. Spent a long time on the phone with a very knowledgeable advisor who made sure the bed and mattress suited exactly what both my husband and me wanted. I ordered 31st May and was told 4 weeks until it would be made and then the courier would deliver the following week. 25th June I received a call from John Ryan asking if delivery 27th was OK. Courier called at 830am advised they will deliver 930am. They came right on time, all PPE in place and even wore protective shoes while in the house. The bed was assembled and all packing and old mattress taken away. 8 nights of sleeping and we love it. The most comfortable bed and best night sleep ever. No aching back or stiff neck. The only trouble is it’s so comfy we struggle to get up on a morning ha ha. Excellent quality and excellent service. I’d highly recommend buying from John Ryan

Their service is good, and the products are well made.They are not cheap, but then cheap comes with a trade off in terms of quality. We wanted a super king size and thought, having measured the size of room, everything would be okay. John Ryan customer service asked for measurements of stairs, video of route etc and concluded we would be best suited with a zip-lock solution. Good job too.
The beds are fantastic. i have waited 6 weeks to post on here just to make sure of a fair review.
Quality of the base units, mattress and headboard are all superb and vastly superior to anything we looked at in our local bed stores. (and I had to look at a lot!!) for a comparable price.
We have a firm mattress, which my wife, who is lighter than me, took some time to adjust to but we now get the best sleep of our lives.
All in all an excellent customer service, fantastic quality product and a very efficient delivery service and team.

We were very nervous about spending so…
We were very nervous about spending so much on the artisan 1500 super king. Everyone was so kind and helpful. It came and it was so hard I had to get out and sleep in the spare room. I felt like I was being pushed by cement. It went on for a week. We then bought a mattress topper to keep it clean mainly but then it was so comfortable.
However we didn’t want to rely on the topper so I called John Ryan and they advised to try it again without the topper and persevere. The topper had been on 2 weeks. We persevered and after just under a month it is the most comfortable bed we have ever had. I have now taken to snoring (apparently) so I must be getting the best sleep I’ve ever had. Thank you John Ryan for all your support as we called you many times and you were always patient and gave us the best advise. Excellent bed.Excellent customer service.

WOW! SLEEP HAS NEVER BEEN SO GOOD!
I suffer from a disease which affects my joints and getting a suitable bed is unbelievably hard. It needs to suit me and my wife and that just adds to the issues. We have tried 5-6 mattresses over the last 10 years and all of them have disappointed in one way or another. They were not cheap and all from big name manufacturers.
I started to trawl the internet about 6 months ago as I was really suffering with my current bed, despite toppers, covers etc. I came across John Ryan Beds and liked the information on the site. I phoned them and had a good chat with Julie, then Marie and then Gary; I think they got to know me in the end! The advice they gave was honest, professional and fair, they didn’t push me to spend more than needed.
I then found a “B Grade” Artisan 1500 King Size on their outlet site which was a split firm one side and medium the other. Absolutely perfect for me and my wife and although slightly more than I had budgeted for I decided to buy it. Marie told me if it didn’t suit they would swap it or refund me, you can’t ask for more.
I placed the order on Thursday, they passed it to the courier on Friday and on Monday they delivered it. Even the couriers were first class, they phoned me to let me know they were stuck in traffic and would be later than planned. The bed was put in place and I was like a kid in a sweetshop, I couldn’t wait for bedtime!
A week later and I feel so much better, no more waking up like a folded up deckchair and having to release my joints and muscles. The bed is superb and I have slept like a log each night. What is even more remarkable is my wife loves it just as much – brilliant for both of us after 10 years of searching for the correct bed!
If you see “B Grade” please do not worry about the quality as the bed is basically brand new, I could not find a single mark or issue with it.
If you want a quality bed or mattress then forget the warehouse shops with “big names” get in touch with these people and buy one – you will not be disappointed!

GREAT BED – GREAT SERVICE
I am giving this a 5 star despite a mistake made at the factory on a special order non-standard headboard. John Ryan admitted a communications error with the factory, apologised and had it sorted very quickly. The bed is fabulous and for the first time in years I have not woken up with a backache!
We ordered an Artisan bed and were prepared to go for the most expensive one, but were advised to go for a cheaper one when we explained our requirements. Good honest service. Ron

JUST LOVE THIS MATTRESS
I told John Ryan about my height weight and problems with my hips and back, and they recommended this mattress. I now look forward to going to bed which I did not before. It supports my weight and cushions my hips. Would definitely recommend John Ryan if you need a suitable mattress. because altho I had bought previous mattresses in shops, and bounced up and down on them, lay on them etc. they were never suitable, and that is why I asked for a recommendation from John Ryan and bought off the internet.
