The Artisan Bespoke 004 has a very similar feel and make up when compared to the Vispring Regal Superb.
The generous upholstery layers of Blended British Fleece Wool & Cotton followed by Bamboo, 1400GSM total, gives a breathable and flexible Comfort Layer to this mattress. Allowing you to stay warmer during the colder months and cooler during the summer due to the high wicking properties of this mattress.
The 1200GSM of Pure Horsetail acts as a secondary spring support layer giving the medium feel to the mattress.
1600 Calico Encased Vanadium Coated Pocket Springs – in 2 tension choices – provide support for endless nights of perfect sleep.
Two rows genuine Hand Side Stitching & Hand Tufted.

No, and no showroom or retailer sells our products. This is part of the reason why our prices can be so competitive: our internet-based company model allows us to avoid passing the excessive costs of other retailers on to our customers. Most staff within showrooms are also not bed experts (unlike our own in-house team). Sadly, such staff probably wouldn’t understand mattress manufacture to the extent that they could reliably answer your questions. Our team will be able to guide you to the right product for you and your budget. We grade the products in our warehouse and the grading is decided based on the condition of the product upon return. All mattresses are Grade B or C. At this stage we cannot give you the history of each product or the very specifics of where any marks may be located so if this is important for you to know then a clearance bed may not be for you and you can choose your mattress in the normal way. We do however guarantee that the condition will be no worse than described below and in most cases is actually better!

Excellent communication and sound advice given by John Ryan before placing my order for a King Size ‘zip and link’ Artisan 004. Delivery was on time and very well managed. Mattress is superbly comfortable, the division between the two mattresses undetectable in use, and just what I needed in terms of manageability for turning which I have now done for the first time. It’s a keeper! Over the past few years, I’ve had back problems and found it challenging to get a good night’s sleep. Waking in the early hours, too uncomfortable to sleep. In addition to stretching, exercise, etc., I pursued better mattresses. Luckily, they came with a send-it-back clause if you don’t like it. I sent two back and finally purchased one of the most expensive mattresses from a leading memory foam manufacturer. My back pain continued. I gave up, believing it wasn’t the mattress. It was the old fart sleeping on the bed. My wife found John Ryan by Design and suggested we try them. I wasn’t in the mood for more disappointment, but she convinced me to give the dice another roll. We’ve had our mattress and bed for about six weeks, here’s my experience so far. My first thought was while it looked exceptionally well made, it didn’t feel much comfier than my costly memory foam mattress. However! After about a week with the mattress, my back pain started to ease. I thought it might be a placebo effect, so I ignored it. That weekend, I slept through to 9 a.m.; usually, my back would force me out of bed well before 7 a.m., whatever the day. I was convinced it wouldn’t last, but my back pain has eased and eased over the weeks. It’s not gone entirely, but in just six weeks, the pain has reduced considerably, and my sleep quality hasn’t been this good in years. My wife also tells me she finds the mattress very comfortable, especially around her hips. In summary, this mattress is a keeper. The memory foam mattress has been relegated to the guest room. We don’t want anyone getting too comfy!

Please, don’t fall for the advertising hype put out by the ‘big boys’ on TV. This is the second time I have had a bed from this company, and is the only company I would use in the future. These guys know what they are talking about, and understand beds, unlike a lot of the ‘big’ companies that spend a fortune on advertising and just want your money. This my review after purchasing a 004 medium sprung in 2017. I don’t normally leave reviews for anything, however as someone with lower back issues I can say this mattress; with 6 years use, is amazing. When I’ve had a ‘bad’ day I lay flat on back for 10 minutes to let my back to settle before rolling on my side with knees tucked up, bliss. I religiously turn and or flip it every two weeks, it’s blooming heavy and a struggle but worth keeping it tip top condition. Back then I paid £1470, wow now it’s over £2000, but I would pay that today. I carried out a lot of research, visited stores trying out lots of mattresses, going through Which Reports, then I literally stumbled across this website, read the reviews, compared prices with high end manufacturers, phoned and had a long chat and took the plunge. Yes it was a risk, but I knew if it was not for me a refund was not an issue. Good luck and rest easy! Alan

I only have positive things to say about John Ryan By Design. So much useful information on the website has helped me understand mattresses in terms of the springs and upholstery and how that alters the feel of the mattress. That info was far better than I found in any retailer I visited. I had spoken on the phone to JRbD a couple of times to help choose the right mattress. Also, the sleep trial is really awesome, especially given the cost of this luxury mattress which is quite an investment. I’ve been sleeping on the Artisan Bespoke 004 Medium King size for about 4 months now. It did take me a while to adjust to the mattress but I honestly sleep much better now compared to my old overly firm mattress. I picked this mattress as I wanted a 100% natural materials mattress. One improvement I would suggest is to use a cover that doesn’t even need any flame retardents but JRbD are trying with the more natural based treatment used. It’s a heavy mattress which needs two strong people to turn, so I have to get two people to do that for me, but I knew this would be the case. I did have an issue that needed sorting, which was mostly due to my own decisions which had a knock on effect, and John Ryan were very fair and went over and above what I expected to sort this out. So I can only give praise to the customer service given. Delivery was within the expected time frame. I don’t yet know about longevity but hopefully the mattress will last a long time. I have a super luxury bed now complete with new pillows, wool duvet and fresh cotton linen. Thank you for improving my sleep at this time in my life.

Couldn’t be happier! I have been using John Ryan for about a decade, various house moves have meant I have purchased and used 3 different models. I started with the Origins 500 which whilst miles better than other mid-range mattress I previously used, was a little too firm (quite ‘bouncy’ due to the poly). I am also a hot sleeper and I found I still woke up feeling a little clammy. I then upgraded to an Artisan Naturals – perfect in every way, temperature issues and back pain finally resolved! I then moved house again and had developed a little knee and hip pain over the years. I purchased an Artisan Bespoke 004 in September at an 20% category B discount and I swear if I do go to sleep with pain, it seems to be miraculously cured in my sleep! I never want to get out of bed again! 🙂

Have to say we had some challenges because we have 3 Vispring mattresses in the house and had just ordered a bigger bed so this was our first John Ryan experience. We were trying to match the firmness and the advice was the Artisan Bespoke 004 is the closest in construction to the Vi Spring Bedstead Supreme. It was delivered super fast but alas the mattress had too much give. We put this to Michaela and she suggested to go for the Artisan Bespoke which feels a bit firmer because of the upholstery layers. Confirm this is the case and a better match for a Vispring Bedstead Supreme medium tension! Service and communication was absolutely superb throughout. Thank you Michaela!

I was nervous about buying on-line, with no opportunity to try out, but I had several conversations with staff before making the order, and they were all very helpful. The John Ryan website is also very informative.
I was keen to have good motion isolation, as my wife fidgets, so we went for the zip and link option. The mattresses are deep and heavy, so, as well as providing good motion isolation, the zip and link option makes them easier to turn. I would think turning a normal king size mattress must be quite difficult.
The bed and mattress arrived ahead of time, all in perfect condition. We have had the bed for a couple of months now. It is extremely comfortable and luxurious. For us, medium tension is just right, firm enough, but you also sink in a little bit to give that touch of luxury. Overall, we could not be more pleased and we would thoroughly recommend John Ryan. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for!

Decided to research buying a new bed, as over the years my purchases left me feeling I got it wrong again. So came across John Ryan by design and asked plenty of questions. The help was brilliant asking questions about my health, my sleep habits and type of bed I was using. After reading decided to go ahead with purchasing a bed, the cost was alot more than I had allocated to spend on a bed, I was not disappointed. My bed arrived beginning of February and after 7 weeks of sleeping on it, I can honestly say it’s been an absolute dream. The delivery was excellent and the guys put it together and adjusted it to where I wanted it placed. Giving me the lowdown on looking after it. Would highly recommend them to anyone. Really helpful staff advised us on which mattress to go for. We have been sleeping on it for over a month and couldn’t be happier so far. We placed the order online following a conversation with them a few weeks earlier, even after I had placed the order they called up just to check our requirements before formally accepting the order, she even remembered us.
So much better than the mattress we replaced, and they talked my wife out of getting a firm mattress, which she previously thought she needed, but John Ryan by design actually corrected her on this. We had tried the vispring mattresses in a store nearby and I would say that the quality does seem very comparable even though the John Ryan mattresses were half the price.

We ordered 2 Artisan bespoke 04 king beds and 2 single Origins 1500 mattresses for our holiday let. John Ryan were excellent in their advice when deciding what to buy and incredibly helpful with timing of the order and delivery. The delivery went very smoothly. The beds and mattresses themselves are superb. So good in fact that my parents who have been through several beds, without finding something they like, are going to buy one, having slept on one of the king beds for a few nights and loving it.
We had high expectations after reading material on the website, but these have been exceeded.

One of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on, and that includes all the good hotels. I ordered an Artisan Luxury mattress with an Artisan base, and the mattress turned out to be a bit too soft for my back. I called John Ryan, they immediately recommended replacing it with Artisan Bespoke 004, and delivered the replacement within three weeks. And then something wonderful happened. I sleep all night and wake up an hour earlier, well-rested, my back and knees feel great, the blood circulation has improved. The delivery guys were lovely, too. Thank you so much!

We ordered a king mattress during lockdown: we found we could readily speak to people (when they were not in, left a message with someone, and they did phone back promptly. Helpful in choosing a mattress and after we ordered, they phoned back, saying that had received the order, would we like to change it and explaining the delivery process. Mattress technology has definitely evolved.
Every purchase in this price range warrants research. Pleased I found this company and then found a friend who has owned one for years. The web site was very useful in this regard. In fact, the whole buying experience has been excellent.
Our old mattress was top of the range from a leading company when I bought it a few decades ago. Mattress technology has definitely developed a lot. It’s more comfortable (and thicker). Best of all, one of us getting up in the night no longer disturbs the other; the mattress absorbs the movement.
If I have any reservation at all, its about turning this mattress monthly when I’m in my 70s and later; it’s neither small or light. Maybe I should worry about that if it happens.

Great customer service and a fantastic bespoke product.
Once order was placed, I received a call to confirm that my specified mattress was appropriate for my wife and I. Though it was confirmed suitable, I did appreciate the service of talking me through my purchase and ensuring a bespoke product would not end up a costly mistake.
I then received an email from their courier suggesting a delivery date and asking me to confirm it was convenient.
On the day of delivery, the delivery team were courteous and happy to bring the mattress, which was well wrapped in protective plastic, inside.
We bought the Bespoke 004 in a zip-link super king. We’ve found it very supportive and comfortable. We knew the upholstery would be firm and thought this best as we were putting it on a sprung divan base and also using an alpaca topper which would soften it. If honest, it is still a little firm, but I heard from Savoir and others that similar mattresses are significantly firmer to start with and take a few weeks/months to soften. Would definitely recommend this manufacturer and their mattresses.

I found the John Ryan website very useful when looking to replace my mattress. It offered lots of information and advice that helped me narrow down my choice. After comparing with other companies, I decided to go with the John Ryan Artisan Bespoke 004 – Medium Tension. I placed my order online and received a follow up call the next day, from a member of the team, to confirm I was happy with my choice. Delivery took around 4 weeks as advised. My mattress arrived as notified by delivery company. The delivery men removed their shoes without being asked, before whisking my mattress upstairs as requested. After airing the mattress, it was time to try it out for the first time. I found I did not need any time to get used to the feel of the mattress, or to let the mattress ‘settle’ as it was extremely comfortable from the word go. I had also bought a mattress topper from John Lewis and together it feels like I am sleeping on a cloud!! I cannot wait to get into my bed!! I do a physical job and suffer from allergies and I have found that this has dramatically improved the quality of my sleep. Highly rated products are so often a disappointment, but this time I really feel I have got my monies worth. Excellent quality. Extremely comfortable. No messing about with returns needed. Cuffed to bits.

Excellent experience overall. Started with some research into mattresses and I found the very comprehensive FAQ. This was really helpful with my decisions. I’m a hot sleeper and needed a breathable and cool mattress as well as the correct support. It was really hard to find exactly what I was looking for in shops – there was very little advise and the marketing material was very confusing. In the end I chose John Ryan by Design because of their advice (online and phone) and the return policy. I’m really happy with my mattress (Bespoke 4) and it was much cheaper than my next alternative (which didn’t have such a great return policy in case of error).

We were a bit dubious about buying a bed online without trying it. However, we received great advice and all questions were answered in a way that inspired confidence. Bed was delivered two weeks ago, and we’re really delighted. Build quality is in a totally different league to our previous bed. For instance if one person turns over the movement is imperceptible to the other occupant, which is a great improvement! The combination mattress (one side medium, one side soft) suits us very well. We bought two beds, an Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 and an Artisan Bespoke 004. Unfortunately the Reflex 1000 proved too tall for my 4ft 11inch mother in law so we had to return it even though the bed was perfect in every other way. Returning the bed was no problem, John Ryan even got the men who collected the bed to wrap it. Our Bespoke bed is absolutely superb and we could not be more delighted. We highly recommend John Ryan.
