TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Mattress suitable for an M&S classic sprung divan base

Jane Price-Hunt asked
5th October 2017

We are 5’6″ and 5’10” and weigh 8 stone and 11 stone respectively. We are looking for a new mattress as our memory foam mattress is now 10 years old. We sleep well on this slatted bed but we both suffer from occasional lower back pain and I currently have a slipped disc, so need good support. We both sleep on our sides.
We have seen an M&S button headboard in grey that we both like, which can be purchased with a sprung top divan with 2+2 drawers. Without trying your mattresses, which would you recommend? I believe you also offer a return policy if we don’t get on with the mattress?
I look forward to your response,
Jane

Good Morning Jane,

Thank you for your question.  This really depends on what type of mattress you are looking for; Our traditional pocket sprung mattresses can go on to a slatted bed base as long as the gaps are no bigger than 3″. If the gaps are bigger than this then we simply advise placing some sheets of MDF or plywood over the base, to prevent the springs settling in the gaps.  This can damage a mattress, cause ridges and you would not get the correct support.

Fusion 3

Our Fusion and Hybrid ranges need to go on to a solid top base as both materials will attempt to settle in any sized gap.

For a pocket sprung mattress you would be matched to a dual spring tension of one half soft and one half medium. You can do a dual spring tension in one piece unit or a zip and link option in our Artisan range but the Origins range does not offer the soft spring option but has a medium spring tension as standard, this may feel firmer for yourself

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

Anyone suffering back pain needs to avoid any sort of mattress that is firm. The advice used to be a firm mattress but that is a misconception.  What you need is the correct spring tension for your body weight.  As such we’d usually advise that you need something more medium feeling but we would need an indication of what type of mattress you are looking for.

Kind Regards

Michaela
