TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Which mattress and spring tension?

simon asked
2nd February 2017

Good morning, after many hours of research I still come back to your web page. I am currently in two minds weather to purchase your 002 or a similar Hypnos.
I am looking for a super king, our details are, 5’11 and about 14.5 st and 5’8 and about 12.5 st and at our age the weight is only going one way! We liked the Hypnos in the showroom (can’t remember model to hand but about £2500) However it was described as medium to firm, yet we found ourselves thinking we wanted it a little firmer. Could this be it had been abused/old? Also how long is your lead time?
many thanks,
Simon.

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The first thing to note is that Hypnos don’t disclose exactly what’s in their mattresses to the same standard that we do. The main reason that we cannot do a comparison is that Hypnos do not publish full details of the construction and upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre). With reference to the Hypnos mattress, we would need to know the model to start to make any type of comparison as I’m sure you understand!

Spring tensions are always set by your body weight and should be the first thing to identify when buying a new mattress. See the table below for guidance.

Spring TensionWire diameter (Gauge)Weight Range
Soft1.2mmBespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone
Firm1.6mm16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic1.9mm20 stone plus

With your particular body weights, a medium spring tension is most appropriate for you both. When trying models in shops, because you do not know how long that model has been on display and how many hundreds or even thousands of people have tried it out for 10-15 minutes a time, all of which has an effect on the upholstery, a new model of the same specification will feel entirely different.

The Artisan Bespoke 002 has a double layer of springs, which will provide a bouncier feel than other products in that range and is a medium feel. if you’re wanting firmer then you might be better looking at the Artisan Bespoke 004 which is still a medium or the firm Artisan Bespoke. The 004 has the same upholstery as the 002, but only a single layer of springs and the Bespoke has the most upholstery in the range, which will provide that slightly firmer feel, even with a medium spring tension.

How to compare mattresses

At the very least you will need to be able to find out the GSM, Spring Gauge, Type and construction method. Below is an example based on the Artisan 002 that you’ve been looking at to help show you what you should expect to see from other retailers.
