Mattresses for bad backs that are not hot

A customer asked

Hi
We are looking for a new double mattress. Our current mattress is a firm dunlopillo and is now about 15 years old. It's been great but we notice how comfy the new breeds of mattresses are when we go to a hotel.
I am 9 stone and my husband 13. I have neck problems aggravated at night and my husband a bad back. I am a hot sleeper. We sleep on side and back.
We have found shops relatively uninformed. We've tried quite a few and our favourites have been the mammoth springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring and mammoth all-foam. We thought we should aim for medium firm.
What is the current advice about support for necks and backs? What feels comfortable but not hot?
Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Hari,

Thanks for your question.

At your body weights we would say that you are borderline between a Soft and Medium spring tension and your husband is matched with a Medium. If you prefer a softer feel then choose the Soft or for a more supportive feel choose the Medium.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We don't have a direct comparison to the Mammoth but for hot sleepers we would guide you to the Artisan range of mattresses. These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses constructed with natural fillings and those natural fillings provide a cool sleep surface.

Given that you disclose a preference for a medium to firm feeling mattress I'd advise to have a look at our Artisan Tailored Pocket 2000. This is constructed using a dual layered spring system that gives a slightly firmer feel than a true medium and has 85% natural fillings in the construction. This model compares with the Vi-Spring Regal Superb that you can find in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Tailored Pocket
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton.
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Poly Cotton
4 1500gsm Pure 100% Mohair
5 2000 Double Tier Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM 3950gsm

Alternatively, the Dunlopillo range is one that we compare with our own Fusion range (100% Natural Latex mattresses).

Our Hybrid range are also foam mattresses that compare with the Tempur range.

We would always advise to test comparison models beforehand as we are an online only retailer.

The old information out there for bad backs / necks was to choose a firm mattress but that simply isn't the case anymore. The recommendation now is to choose a medium or soft.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
