Which mattress is right for me?

I need to replace my mattress and have read your article . I am a 67 year old male, 6'1" tall and weigh 15st. I sleep on my side and I have a wooden bed frame with a slatted wood base to hold the mattress. I would like to get a really good one, pocket sprung as you suggest, and I want to ensure it is worth the cost. Currently I am waking with shoulder pain and lower back pain.

Dear John,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.

From what you have said it would appear that your current mattress is too firm in the upholstery layers (also known as the comfort layers).  This would explain the pressure pain you are experiencing in your shoulder.  We wouldn't recommend anything firm in the comfort layers for side sleepers as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  Incorrect spring tension could be the cause of your lower back pain.  Spring tension is based solely on a persons body weight and at your body weight, you require a medium spring tension to give you the correct support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

We have two pocket sprung mattress ranges.  The Origins range is our synthetic range, more suitable for people on a budget, although they are made to the same exacting standards as our Artisan range. The Artisan range is our natural fibre range, more suitable for those looking for a cooler sleep surface.  We would need to know the firmness of your current mattress to determine which of our models would be more suitable for yourself.  If for instance, you have a firm or orthopaedic mattress I would guide you to a mattress that is a medium in the comfort layers.  Our most popular being the Origins Pocket 1500 and the Artisan Naturals.

If your current mattress is a medium in the comfort layers you should be looking at something that is soft, such as our Origin Comfort 1000 or our Artisan Luxury.

Finally, I would advise that if the space between the slats on your bed frame are greater than 3" you should board them over with either MDF or Plywood.  This is because the springs in your new mattress will sink into this gap meaning you wouldn't get the correct support from your mattress and over time this can damage your mattress.
Please do not hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419 if you require any further information.  Our office hours are 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards
Michaela
