Hello. My wife and I are in need of a new mattress. My wife unfortunately has a lot of lower back pain and upper back/shoulder pain. Our current mattress is pretty much dead and you can feel the springs in it. My wife weighs 9.5 stone and I weigh 13.5 stone. I have no idea which type of mattress to go for - should it be memory foam? Pocket sprung? Open coil? Orthopaedic? In terms of firmness - should it be firm or medium?

Hi Zeshaan,

Thanks for your questions.

At your body weights you would be matched with a Medium spring tension on a traditional pocket sprung mattress;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Pocket sprung mattresses are generally considered to be the "better" option as you get support from the springs inside and then the fillings atop those springs provide you with the comfort.

I, unfortunately, can't tell you what type of mattress to look for as comfort is very personal and subjective; What works for me won't work for you.

Orthopaedic mattresses are generally very firm and with the existing pains I wouldn't recommend this. Foams are usually good for pressure relief but can be quite an acquired taste so I'd always recommend trying them out first.

Stores like Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed will house some of our comparison models so I think at this stage it's worth testing them out to narrow your choices down.

The Tempur range compares to our Hybrid Foam range. The Dunlopillo range compares to our Fusion range. The Vi-Spring range compares to our Artisan range.

Please note that we aren't currently retailing foam or latex brand new for at least 16 weeks as we can't source the same quality of material so if you test them out and like them the only way to purchase them at the minute is via our Outlet or eBay store.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
