Hi, I have read up that the calico pocket mattresses are the best & while searching on the web for the calico pocket your website was one to choose from.

Basically we bought a Simba foam mattress over a year ago and we are waking up in pain, my partner seems to think it's because of our metal bed frame/base but I'm not sure?

Are all your mattresses calico pocket sprung models? How can we sort out our uncomfortable Simba mattress?

Hi Allison,

Great to hear from you and sorry that you're waking up in pain with your Simba mattress. Hopefully, we can offer you some more insight into why you're waking up in pain during the night with this mattress.

Mattress Bases for a Simba Mattress

First off let's remove the mattress base from the problem. If your metal mattress base is in sound condition its very unlikely that this is causing the issue with your Simba mattress. In fact, Simba mattresses and other boxed rolled mattresses are all pretty much made for slatted mattress bases. Unless the slats are too far apart then it shouldn't be this causing the problem. You can find out if they are too far apart if you look under the bed and see the mattress bulging through in between the slats. If this is happening you ideally need to board over the slats.

If it's not happening then the problem more likely lies with the Simba mattress not being suitable for you.

Problems with your Simba Mattress

It's hard to identify exactly why it's causing the pain during the night but if we look at some of the drawbacks of the Simba mattress it may help shed more light on the issue.

Simba mattresses are made from a proprietary form of memory foam. Simbasleep has its own version of this Vasco elastic foam. However, it relies on heat to work and mould so it does get frequent critique online that it's far too hot. This can lead sleepers to wake up frequently needing to turn over the try and cool down. It can also heat up parts of your body and aggravate them during the night if you're a warm sleeper.

This Simba foam also holds your body in one position during the night. For fidgety sleepers or people with bad backs, this can be quite uncomfortable, as it doesn't allow you to as easily make micro-adjustments during the night like a pocket spring and natural fibre mattress would. It takes time for the foam to release you and return to its original position.

As the Simba mattress is one size is all there's no way to choose a properly tailored support level. There's only one density of support foam available (which they sadly don't disclose) so there's no way of knowing if the support is adequate for your bodyweight or sleeping style.

Why Calico Pocket Spring Models are More Suitable

You're right that a calico encased pocket sprung mattress is the best quality you can buy.

Why?

Because the spring unit can be completely tailored to your bodyweight. Spring wire tensions are manufactured with weight tolerances in mind so the soft, medium or firm spring should be chosen based on your bodyweight. If you and your partner are in different weight ranges then a split tension or zip and link mattress can be chosen. So both of you get the ideal spring tension that you need. Simba, Eve, Casper and the Emma mattress all just offer one level of support.

These Calico encased pocket springs are fully breathable and independent of each other. Meaning they can offer support exactly where you need it. If you need to turn over they instantaneously return to their original shape. No waiting for any hybrid foam to slowly return to normal as you may struggle to turn.

Our Origins range of mattresses all use spunbond spring units, which are price appropriate. They still offer independent support but at a budget-friendly price.

Our Artisan mattress range uses calico encased and vanadium coated pocket springs. The same type that Vispring and Savoir use in their high-end models. Totally breathable and rust-resistant springs in 3 different tensions depending gon your requirements.
