Best mattress style for side sleeping?

Rosie

Hi,
I'm a side sleeper, the past few mattresses I've owned have been very uncomfortable and left me waking up aching. I currently have one of those rolled "7 zone" mattress on my bed, I feel like it just sinks down and is very hard and uncomfortable. I have to sleep with a pillow between my knees to alleviate hip pain.
I've read so many different reviews and seen these fad mattresses "eve, Simba etc" also one source says a medium firm mattress would be best, others a soft/medium?
It's just me, I tend to sleep more on one side than directly in the middle.
I have a king sized slatted base. I'm 5'8.
Looking forward to your suggestions?

Hi Rosie,

Thanks for your question.

Your sleeping habits do dictate the type of mattress that you choose. Side sleepers need to avoid anything too firm in the top layers. The reason for this is that it will cause pressure point pains in places such as your shoulders, hips and knees etc.

As such you generally should be looking at something more medium or soft in those top layers. I'd realistically advise that a pocket sprung mattress is where you should be looking; These have 2 elements - The spring that provides you with the support and then the fillings that provide you the comfort as you're in direct contact with these.

Have a look at our Origins Pocket 1500 or Artisan Naturals. Both are true medium feeling models in the top layers. The Artisan range has the benefit of being constructed with natural fillings, which in turn provide a cool sleep surface; Ideal for anyone who has heat issues during sleep. The Naturals is also our best selling model.

It is safer to go for a medium feeling model over a very soft one because if, after 4-6 weeks, you find it too firm then you can always add a mattress topper to introduce an additional comfort layer.

We do however, need to know your body weights to discuss suitability of spring tension. Below are our general guidelines on spring tension vs body weight;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

This doesn't necessarily rule out Foam or Latex (Our own Hybrid and Fusion ranges) but I'd always advocate trying these beforehand as they are quite an acquired taste. They give a very similar sink in sensation to memory foam but without the heat issues associated and are great for pressure relief.

The comparison models for our Artisan, Hybrid and Fusion ranges can be found in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed. It is always highly recommended to test the comparison models beforehand but don't forget that you are protected with our 60 day love it or return it guarantee. This is a no quibble policy meaning that if the product isn't right you can return it for a full refund or utilise the one time exchange.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419. Our office is open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
