Foam or pocket sprung for existing slatted divan?

A customer asked

We currently have a Dunlopillow Talalay Diamond zip link super king mattress which we bought with a slatted divan base. We’ve found that a ridge developed where the mattress zips together and we now both sleep in a dip. You can see the indents on both sides of the bed!

We tried adding an mdf sheet a couple of years ago but I think the damage had already been done. It’s around 10 years old now and really in need of replacement. It feels fairly firm overall but we still feel we sink into the foam, not in a good way!

The most comfortable mattress we have owned was a king size Rest Assured Symphony pocket sprung 2000, on a spring edge divan but we found we lost a few inches on either side as the mattress fell away on the edge. We still have this as a guest bed and have had comments on how comfy it’s been. A really good nights sleep but we ended up too close together because we were avoiding the edge.

Many years ago we stayed in a Westin hotel in Canada and slept on their Heavenly Bed which felt amazing. It was a zip link super king and was what prompted us to get our Dunlopillo bed, but they just don’t compare! No idea if it was foam or pocket sprung though, wish we’d checked.

Not even sure if we need zip and link, we originally thought it might stop us each from feeling the other turn over.

I am 10 stone and sleep mainly on my side while my husband is around 12 stone and prefers to sleep on his front. We are so confused as to what to buy next.

Our budget is approx £800-900, possibly more if needed.

Do we keep the existing divan and spend all our budget on a mattress or do we try to replace both the divan and mattress within our budget?

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

Zip and Link mattresses are the only true way to completely eliminate disturbance from the other person as the 2 separate entities minimise transference of movement in the springs.

However, some people are more sensitive to the movement on a one-piece mattress so it's difficult to comment definitively.

At your body weights on a pocket sprung mattress we would match you both with a Medium spring tension; This is determined solely by your body weight at this is what provides you the support from the mattress.

We only ever really recommend replacing the base if it's faulty in any sort of way and no longer serves its purpose.

At your budget you would be limited with ourselves to the Origins range. This is a range of pocket sprung mattresses with synthetic fibres.

Our Origins Comfort 1000 is our starter model within that range - At Super King Size Zip and Link it comes in at £670.00 for the mattress itself. With a no drawer base it takes the total cost to £920.00 (always check our shop for current prices). The Origins Comfort 1000 is our softest model in that top layer giving a soft sink in sensation.

If you were considering just replacing the mattress you could look at moving up to the Artisan range - This is again pocket sprung mattresses but with natural fillings giving a cool sleep surface. However, our starter model; The Artisan 1500, comes in at £1040.00 for a one-piece Super King Size mattress so sits outside your budget.

We only do our Hybrid range (Foam mattresses) in the one piece and at Super King Size it starts at £1300.00 so again it sits outside that budget.

You could maybe consider replacing the base to start with as the base can alter the sleep sensation of the mattress but I'd advise speaking to the retailer you purchased the mattress from to discuss suitability.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419. Our office is open Monday t Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
