What mattress will stop us rolling together?

A customer asked

Hi, this request is probably like many others you receive but hope you can help me make a decision!!

I have looking at replacing our bed/mattress for such a long time but am worried about making the wrong choice for such an expensive item. My husband is 6 foot tall and weighs 17st, I am 5 ft 10 ins and weight 14and a half stone. He can sleep anywjere on anything but I am not so lucky. I would like a bed which will not make us roll together either. I have always been a bad sleeper, unless exhausted, and wake up everyday still tired and aching in my back, shoulders and neck. I always have to have pillows at my side under my arm between my knees to get comfortable. I have tried a number of beds in shops and the most comfortable so far has been the Sealy, Sotherby mattress which I was told is 1400 springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring, latex with pillow topping. I thought I had finally made a decision but having read your information, I do not want to spend so much money ((£1549) on a pillow top mattress. I suffer from Bursitis and always sleep on my side near the edge of the bed. I also get very hot in bed at night. I was always told that you needed to try a mattress before you buy, so it seems strange to think of buying one from the internet without ever having tried it. I am desperate for advice as it is getting more difficult to choose, the more information I find out. Sorry this is long-winded Regards Judith

Hi Judith,

Thank you for your question.  Sorry to hear you are having problems. I don't think the Sealy Sotheby is suitable for a number of reasons.  Firstly it's one-sided, which is the worst construction method of a mattress given that once the pillow top compresses its game over for the mattress.  Secondly whilst it contains latex Sealy give you no discernable information about the blend and density which is vitally important.  There are not many companies out there that are as transparent as us.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The first thing to consider is your body weight, this is vitally important when choosing a new mattress.  Your body weight is the factor that determines which spring tension will give you the correct support.  Incorrect spring tension can cause back and neck pain.  You need a medium spring tension but your husband is borderline, this means he can choose between the medium or firm spring tension.  Personally, I would advise the firm spring tension. Whichever he decides on, I would recommend a Zip and Link (only available in King Size and above) mattress to stop the roll together.

Artisan Naturals

The Sealy Sotheby is a Posturepedic mattress, which means it is very firm in the upholstery and springs.  From what you have said your current mattress is to firm for you.  As a side sleeper, we wouldn't recommend anything too firm in the upholstery as this can cause pressure pains in the shoulders, hips and knees.  Our two best selling traditional pocket sprung mattresses are the Origins Pocket 1500 which is made with synthetic fibres and the Artisan Naturals from our natural fibre range.  Natural fibres do offer a cooler sleep surface.  Another direction you may want to go in is a foam based mattress such as our Hybrid range or a solid core latex mattress in our Fusion range.

Fusion 3

Buying a bed online is not as daunting as it first appears.  When you visit a showroom and find a bed you find comfortable do you know what fibres that mattress is made from? Or how long it has been in there and how many people have already softened it? This will only tell you how your bed will feel in a few months (or even years if it has been there awhile or a lot of people of diverse body weights have already tried it).  We have the '60 day love it or return it guarantee' so if you are not happy with your choice there is no quibble about returning or exchanging it.

If you would like to discuss this in detail call our friendly team on 0161 437 4419.  Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
