Reducing the bounce in mattress
This article is amazingly helpful about slatted bases. Thank you.
I’m struggling with the combination of a fidgety partner and a sprung slatted base. Whilst the springs/" class="" >pocket spring mattress can cope with small shifts, his fidget movements at night makes the whole mattress move and disturbs my sleep! Would boarding over the slats help reduce this kind of movement, or should we ditch the sprung slats entirely?
Hi Stephanie,
Thank you for your question.
Sprung slatted bases can cause a problem in that they can cause a hump to appear in the middle of the mattress due to the mattress which is on the base being unsubstantial and lightweight that the arches on the slats are pushing the internal spring unit out of shape. By placing MDF or hardboard over the sprung slats, this will even out the base giving it a more solid feel.
However, if you are still feeling your partner moving around on a pocket sprung mattress, the only way to totally eliminate this would be to have a zip & link mattress which are two separate mattresses that are zipped together. If using zipped mattresses in a bed frame, you will have to ensure the enclosure is slightly bigger than the intended mattress size. For example, a well built 6′ zipped mattress is about 6′ and 2 inches.
