Hi,

We've come across your website searching online at alternative mattresses to upgrade our bed to something much better quality (I'm hoping top quality hotel level) and hopefully a lot cooler. Having read through a few of your articles, watched some of your mattress YouTube videos and tried various combinations on your mattress selection widget, I thought simply getting in touch was the better idea.

We currently have a Sealy posturepedic pocket palermo 1400, it's a long story how we ended up with this but let's just say that the company we purchased from went out of business having taken our order, luckily they'd already shipped some products, but neither the mattress nor the divan set were what we actually chose. You live and learn and we've just put up with it. Maybe you know more than me on the mattress we have.

Anyway, the current bed is a king-size, but we're looking at upgrading to a super king so will be starting completely fresh.

A bit about us;

I'm 6ft 3" and circa 95-100kg depending on what level of gym commitment I've managed each year vs work.
I occasionally get a bit of a bad back, whether the mattress causes that I don't know, I've been blaming recently ageing past 40 and being tall, but it could be that mattress

I also sleep very hot, so much so I've had to buy a woolroom mattress topper and woolroom duvet as I was always waking up sweating in this bed beforehand, I still do on occasion but not so much. Therefore I'd definitely need something breathable, at least far more breathable than this Sealey palermo 1400

My partner on the other hand is quite petite bless her.

She's 5ft 3 (at a push) and weighs 54kg so she tells me (let's just accept that and move on). She doesn't tend to struggle with sleeping hot, but she prefers warmth anyway so that's mainly a problem I face and remaining cool in bed.

As you can see we're sized and weighted substantially different but it seems you guys can cater for that.

Unfortunately, as much as I don't particularly like the look of most divans, we do need some drawer storage and so I believe we're stuck with them. We'd likely need a 2+ 2 continental drawers as we do have side tables to clear with the nearest drawer to the headboard. That said the images of the ones you use in the darker fabric look quite nice (hopefully you have fabric swatches should we get that far)

I also noticed that you offer a sprung base on the Artisan divans, perhaps that's worth having? I'm all ears and will listen to an educated reason behind that.

As for the mattress I've been reading mainly about the Artisan 1500 and the Artisan Naturals. Unless I'm misreading it the Artisan Naturals was first, and then you produced the Artisan 1500 to try and recreate the feel and some benefits of the Naturals but at a lower price point?

The 1500 having a reasonable amount of natural fibre in but some 30% less than the Naturals?

Quite what that offers in terms of breathability I'll leave to you.

I may well be wrong with either of those, but I just need something that feels substantial, can handle my weight and my partners lack of, not give me a bad back but also not make me wake up wet through with sweat. You've probably heard this all before so I'm hoping I'm not as awkward as I sound.

Budget wise I'm not absolutely flush with cash at the moment as bonus payments have dried up since covid. That said £2500 ish all in should be feasible or there abouts, if there's a finance option that'd be great as it'll give me breathing space until I get sight of a bonus in the future when all this mess has passed.

Anyway, I've rattled on enough now, hopefully you can help :)

Thank you,

Regards

Damon

Hi Damon,

Thanks for getting in touch about your Sealy Posturepedic mattress and we're sorry to hear it is causing such excess heat at night.

Great to get so much background from you too to help build your sleep requirements! The detail you've provided is really helpful in enabling us to make a tailored mattress recommendation for you and your partner.

Sealy Posturepedic Palermo 1400 Causing Night Sweats

The main issue people seem to have with this model is that it keeps them very hot at night. The reason for this is that is a 100% synthetic man-made mattress. Synthetic fibres retain and hold onto heat far more than their natural fibre counterparts. This is because they are far less breathable than say wool. That's why adding a wool topper has helped reduce, albeit not completely remedy this issue.

If you're a hot sleeper you want to avoid synthetic foams, polyester and other man made synthetic latexes - like innergenic, as much as possible as they can make sleeping on them almost impossible. Some customers report to us they feel like they're even sleeping on lava when they mistakenly buy such mattresses.

Sadly this Sealy mattress model is also only one-sided meaning that all the wear is on one side. You can't turn it over to even out settlement. So the second complaint of these types of mattresses is that they have a very short lifespan compared to a two sided mattress. No turn mattresses are often sold as a benefit but really it's just a way for a number of retailers to charge full price for half a mattress in some cases!

Choosing the correct spring tension:

Ok so at your bodyweights you both require a 1.4 medium gauge spring tension. More often than not we hear from customers who have incorrectly and mistakenly chosen a different spring tension thinking it relates to the overall feel of a mattress. It does not. Mattress feel and comfort levels come from the upholstery. Pocket spring tensions are dictated and designed for weight to height ranges.

Which mattress is best to reduce heat?

Ok, so we know you need a cool mattress given you're a hot sleeper. Natural fibres are the best at wicking away moisture and excess heat. They are also incredibly breakable both in the summer and winter helping to manage heat far better than their basic synthetic counterparts.

In an ideal world, we would recommend you choose a 100% natural fibre mattress with a calico encased pocket spring such as our Artisan Bespoke 004. This is because all the components down to the pocket spring cases are fully breathable. However, we appreciate that some times budget constraint need to be managed. We go as far as to say that if your current divan isn't broken we wouldn't advise replacing it as this will, in turn, reduce the amount of spend you have for a completely suitable mattress.

The Artisan 1500 is a fantastic mattress but at your bodyweights will provide a firm feel in the comfort layers. From your feedback and issue with back pain, we believe a slightly more forgiving mattress would be suitable, such as the Artisan Naturals or Artisan Bespoke 004 with a medium feel in the upholstery layers. The main difference between these is the Artisan Bespoke 004 is 100% natural fibre whereas the Artisan Naturals is 85%. Both though are far cooler than any synthetic mattress or polyester-based memory foam mattress model.

The Artisan Bespoke 004 is slightly more forgiving compared to the Artisan Naturals. Both are two-sided and hand side stitched.

Going back to firmer comfort layers in mattresses, these can lead to or exaggerate back pain during the night. This is because they force you into a very rigid sleeping position. Some people love this, but most with back niggles or pains find it very uncomfortable. In fact, Orthopedic mattresses have pretty much been entirely discounted as being suitable for people with bad backs!

Super King Mattress Size Guidance:

One thing we would ask you to consider is a zip and link when choosing a super kingsize mattress. The reason for this is two-fold.

Firstly, trying to turn a one-piece super kingsize once a month can be very difficult. Our high-end upholstery packed mattresses can weigh around 70kg in a one-piece. All of our mattresses need turning once a month to help even out settlement and ensure the mattress lasts for years to come.

Secondly, superking size mattresses can suffer from inconsistent central wear over their lifespan. This is because 99% of sleepers never use the very central part of the mattress. Preferring to stick to each side. Even with turning this central area can remain at a higher loft to the rest of the mattress. This is because it never gets used. In a zip and link, this is far reduced as they can be fully turned to use all sides. The fact you have two separate yet unified mattresses ensures that settlement is reduced. We also find that zip and links provide additional perimeter support in such large-sized mattresses which can help super king mattresses last far longer than a one piece.

Food for thought on that one!

Mattress Bases:

We have a really detailed article here on bed bases and what to look for. A sprung edge base can add an additional layer of progressive support to a mattress. Basically a mattress for your mattress. It can help extend the lifespan of your mattress and bring you comfort to an exquisite level. It really depends on budget and preference.

Of course, we can send out any fabric samples you may require for a bed base whether that's a divan base with drawers or one of our more ornate bed frames.

Access for mattresses and bases:

Please double-check with a one-piece mattress that you have suitable access and stairwell sizes to fit the mattress upstairs. Our small friendly team can advise if you want to send us any photographs of potential access routes. They are well versed in assisting!

We don't offer finance at this time. We trialled it but the fees that the finance companies used kept being hiked up and we didn't want to have to burden any non-finance choosing customers with this increase. So we simply stopped offering it and kept our prices the same for everyone.

We hope that helps and if you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
