How a Pocket Sprung Mattress Can Help With Pain

Waking up to a painful and nagging neck or back pain in the mornings is horrible. Night after night of disruptive sleep due to pain can become really debilitating. In fact, we’ve answered thousands of queries on painful sleep in our Ask a question section of the site. Thankfully sleeping pains are rarely serious and are most likely the result of either your sleeping position, your mattress or both.

Many people believe that they need a firmer mattress to alleviate pains, especially chronic back pain. Often orthopaedic or firm mattresses are recommended by chiropractors too; due to the assumption that more firmness equals more support.

However, it’s important to know that firmness and support are actually two separate things, and just because a mattress is ‘Firmer’ doesn’t mean it’s better suited to helping you with your morning pains. With this in mind, we wanted to highlight why a Natural fibre Pocket Sprung Mattress can be the perfect solution to alleviate your pain…

It’s all about spring tension

Every quality mattress should always be able to fully accommodate your exact weight and height. Whether the mattress is offering you the right level of support largely comes down to your weight. This is because the vast majority of mattresses are sprung, and a <a href=”https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/understanding-beds/pocket-springs-the-arguments-2/”>spring unit will be made with a weight range in mind. There are exemptions, such as solid core latex or foam mattresses, but the majority will have spring units with varying weight tolerances.

The spring tension is largely attributed to the spring gauge ie the width of the wire and any quality mattress manufacturer should be able to tell you the tension and gauge when asked.

Take our Artisan Range for example, which come in three different spring tensions, and you’ll need to choose the correct one to get the support you need for that pain-free slumber.

Medium1.4mmUpto 16 stone

If you do suffer from back pain and you all prefer to sleep on your side, then you won’t want upholstery layers that are too firm, because this will put too much pressure on your shoulders, hips and knees. You may find a medium feel in the comfort layers more suitable for you if this is the case.

Pocket springs are perfect for tailored support

When it comes to a Pocket Sprung mattress, each individual spring is wrapped and separated by a breathable pocket of material. Meaning they can all work independently, unlike the dreaded cage sprung or open coil spring system mattresses, which are cheap and offer far less precision when it comes to supporting a sleeper.

Now there are two different types of Pocket springs to assess when looking for a new mattress. The first is the Synthetic or Spun bond Pocket Spring. These are the starting point and offer great independence compared to open coil springs. However, the ultimate Pocket Spring is the Calico encased spring. These are covered in a 100% Natural Calico Cotton cover and are tied together by hand. This precise craft means they react even quicker than spun bond springs. The Calico is also far more breathable than the synthetic ones meaning it aids cooler sleep far better than a synthetic spring.

The material that the springs are made of is also important to note. The most advanced Pocket springs are Vanadium coated which means the wire has been treated to be rust proof, resilient and have a better tensile strength compared to ordinary wire.

What are micro springs?

micro springs

Micro springs or HD springs are a new ‘innovation’ that mattress shops are pushing. In the race to get the highest spring count micro springs are being used as a sales tactic. Even though there’s a limit to how many springs you actually need in a mattress. Once you go past this you’re simply removing upholstery comfort layers to fit in more springs just for the sake of it. In reality, they are pretty much pointless as you’re just increasing the amount of wire in your mattress and reducing the upholstery. It’s a sales ploy to dupe buyers into falling for this new ‘mini spring’. You’re far better off with a full-size Calico Pocket Spring than thousands of tiny springs that compress completely as soon as you lie on the bed, making them totally redundant. You can read a much more comprehensive argument against Micro or HD springs here.

In a Pocket Sprung Mattress, each cushioned pocket spring can effectively absorb every movement you make. They can instantly react and adjust themselves to the pressure the shape of your body makes. These mattresses are designed to provide unrivalled, tailored support for your whole body, as you stretch out for a soothing slumber.
