Are You Sleep Procrastinating? How To Beat it!

We all procrastinate from time to time, whether it be putting off a job that needs doing or leaving the dishes for tomorrow. But did you know that many people voluntarily put off getting some shut eye, even though there’s nothing that should be keeping them up. You too might suffer from “sleep procrastination”, where even though you know how important a good night’s rest is, you still can’t get yourself into your bed.

Instead you stay up, watching TV, reading, chatting, or working and no matter how tired you feel, you keep putting off sleep as long as possible. The next morning you promise yourself that you’ll get to bed earlier, but the same thing keeps happening all over again. If this sounds all too familiar, then don’t worry, we’ve got some steps you can take to put an end to the procrastination.

Step 1 – Take the time to understand the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Once you know how much your health can be enhanced through quality sleep, you’ll want to prioritise it, and get to bed at a decent time.

Step 2 – Get a routine in place every night in order to train your body to be ready for bed. Try to keep away from any screens for at least an hour before you sleep. This way you’ll avoid the blue light that can interfere with your sleep cycle.

Step 3 – Move any electrical temptations away from you whenever possible. Definitely make an effort to get any TV, computer or phone screens out of your sleep space, as none of these are bedroom essentials and only serve to distract your mind from a soothing sleep.

Step 4 – Plan out a schedule, but start from the time you want to actually go to bed. This will help you work out how you can cut your daily tasks down in order to hit your preferred sleep time. If applicable, get your partner to stick to a sleep schedule too. Try to not use the weekend as a time to catch up on lost sleep, instead keep a regular routine on these days as well, as this will make it easier to stay organised during the week.

Step 5 – By having a clear schedule in place, you’ll be able to see every task and deadline that you have coming up, making it more simple to plan out your day. Look out for ways that you can free up more of your time to sleep. For example, make extra portions when you’re cooking dinner, so that you can freeze some and eat it on another night. Or you could find an evening where you can get all of your outfits ready for the week. Anything like this that can be done in advance can save you time, and ensure you have enough of it left to get the rest you deserve.

Step 6 – Do something that relaxes your body and mind before bed each night. Whether it’s reading a novel, listening to some soothing music, or being mindful with a little meditation. Whatever it is, make sure it’s quiet and relaxing, and of course make sure that you enjoy it. This will help you see your sleep time as a little luxury that you’ve earned for yourself.
