Why do mattress companies have return or exchange policies?

With all shop-based or online purchases of mattresses, you need to ensure you’ve bought the right product. This is why, for the past 15 years, we at John Ryan By Design have been uncovering all the details you need to know before choosing a new mattress or bed, which is why we are considered the UK’s leading independent mattress maker.

It’s not a case of seeing what you can afford and then rolling the mattress dice. There’s much more to choosing the perfect mattress.

Before you buy a new mattress, you need to know 3 key things:

  1. What exactly is inside the mattress in terms of fillings and springs?
  2. Does the spring tension or support layer match up with my bodyweight?
  3. What are the mattress details or quality indicators that ensure it will last me more than a few years?

Return and exchange policies are vital so that once you have understood the above 3 key mattress buying details above you have a failsafe in case the mattress you’ve chosen simply doesn’t work. This is especially true when buying online or in a shop without expert mattress advice. This is a marked difference from speaking to or emailing our small expert team, who can help save you hours of bed guesswork and heartache by buying a mattress blind.

In our opinion, all retailers should offer you the chance to either return or exchange the product if something doesn’t quite work. We offer a full ‘Love it or return it’ 60 day guarantee, which offers you both of these options at no cost to yourself.

Let’s take a deep dive into the IKEAS mattress return and guarantee policy before you buy one of their beds for peace of mind.

What is the IKEA Mattress Return Policy?

IKEA have a  ‘Love it or exchange it’ policy, not a ‘Love it or Return it’ policy like the one we offer at John Ryan By Design. So if you don’t get on with your mattress, you can’t return it for a refund, only an exchange.

IKEA lists this as a “‘Love it or exchange it’ is our IKEA 90-day trial scheme for newly purchased mattresses.”

This gives you the option to ‘trial’ the mattress (as long as it’s kept in a pristine, unmarked condition, which all mattress retailers would expect) and then do a one-time exchange.

How do I exchange an IKEA mattress?

The IKEA website confirms that to exchange your bed you need to “Simply bring your mattress and receipt to any IKEA store, and we’ll help you find a different one. If you had your mattress delivered via our Home Delivery Service the collection and delivery of the replacement mattress will be free-of-charge.

The mattress must be brought back to the store and not damaged in any way. Given that IKEA rolls most of their mattresses so you can get them home easily it can be tricky to return these mattresses yourself. (If you want to know why we would never roll our beds then this guide here may shock you as to what happens to rolled up mattresses in some instances!!)

The only way to get your IKEA mattress back to them for an exchange is either in the back of your car or the need to hire a van if it’s a double, kingsize or super kingsize mattress as these won’t fit in a standard-sized car. Once your IKEA mattress is unrolled they will be near impossible to reroll without folding or damaging the bed.

Never fold an IKEA mattress, as they won’t accept it. Folding any mattress will cause irreparable damage to it and the spring unit.

If you can’t reroll it, you will need to hire a van to take the mattress back to the store.

It goes without saying that covering the mattress in a mattress bag or protective carrier is essential to stop it from getting marked or snagged during returning it to the store. Based on the return specifics listed online, IKEA will not pick up your mattress for a return.

To give an idea of comparison, we will collect your exchange free of charge and either send protective bags or bag it up during collection, which saves a whole heap of time and drama trying to arrange a van to take your mattress back to a store.

With higher-end mattresses like Savoir, ViSpring, Hastens, Harrison Spinks and John Ryan by Design, you’d never be able to fold the mattress as there are too many fillings to enable it. A bit of a safeguard, especially if moving house!

Let’s now look at the conditions for returning an IKEA mattress that must be satisfied.

IKEA Mattress Return Conditions

  • You can exchange your mattress once within 90 days.
  • The only condition is that it’s not dirty, marked or damaged.
  • The policy doesn’t apply to SULTAN bed bases, bed slats or IKEA mattress pads.
  • New mattresses often feel a bit too firm, so wait at least a month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body.
  • To get the best comfort you also need the right pillow, make sure you have a pillow that suits you and your new mattress.
  • Once you’ve found your perfect mattress, it’ll be covered by our 10-year IKEA mattress guarantee. Terms and conditions for our guarantee can be found in our guarantee brochures. This return policy and our guarantee do not affect your statutory rights.
  • If your mattress exchange is an upgrade, you’ll just cover the price difference between the original and the replacement.
  • If the replacement’s price is lower, we’ll credit the difference to an IKEA Refund card for you to use towards a future purchase.

The key point to note that is not super clear is the fact you have to return the mattress yourself.

If you want to exchange then you pay the difference between the model. The good thing with this is f you choose a cheaper model, they will give you store credit. With our John Ryan By Design mattresses, you simply get the price difference back if cheaper as we prefer simplicity.

Another condition is you must have the original receipt with you. They won’t accept any returns without it or guarantee claims. You can’t transfer your rights either, so if someone else bought the bed for you or you bought it second hand there are no exchange or guarantee rights transferred.

How to keep your IKEA mattress clean before an exchange

We’ve established that your mattress needs to be kept super clean if you’re considering exchanging your IKEA bed. The best way to do this is by using a mattress topper and then a mattress protector. They are, believe it or not, two separate and essential pieces of mattress equipment.

  • The mattress protector is machine washable and protects your IKEA mattress from sweat and stains during the 90-day period. If it’s stained, they won’t accept a return.
  • The Mattress topper acts as another line of defence against any damage or accidental snagging of the cover fabric which would be deemed to be damaged.

It’s better for these two replaceable items to be damaged than for your new IKEA mattress and a wasted journey trying to return it to one of their stores.

IKEA Guarantee Terms

IKEA’s guarantee terms can be found in a PDF off their main IKEA mattress guarantee page. We’ve listed them below to make it easy to find them as reading PDF’s on mobile phones can sometimes be tricky.

How long is the guarantee valid?

The guarantee for mattresses remains in force for ten (10) years and is valid from the date of purchase. The original purchase receipt is required as proof of purchase.

What is covered under this guarantee?

This guarantee applies to domestic use only and covers defects in material and workmanship in all mattresses. The guarantee covers split seams, damaged springs, broken handles and substantial sagging. This guarantee is to the benefit of the original purchaser of the product. It is not transferable.

Products not covered under this guarantee:

This guarantee does not apply to mattress pads, sofa bed mattresses and children’s mattresses. Everyday life at home puts high demands on a mattress. IKEA mattresses are rigorously tested to comply with our strict standards for quality and durability as well as with the highest standards for domestic use. This means that we can offer you a 10-year guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship that covers mattresses from IKEA. This guarantee is subject to the terms and conditions stated in this folder. The mattresses have a 10-year guarantee.

What will IKEA do to correct the problem?

IKEA will examine the product and decide, at its sole discretion, if it is covered under this guarantee. If considered covered, IKEA through its own service operations, will then, at its sole discretion, either repair the defective product or replace it with the same or a comparable product. If it is covered by this guarantee, IKEA will pay the costs of repairs, spare parts, labour and travel for repair staff that IKEA incur, provided that the product is accessible for repair without special expenditure. This does not apply to any repair work not authorized by IKEA. Replaced parts become the property of IKEA. If the item is no longer sold by IKEA, IKEA will provide an appropriate replacement. It is IKEA that determines, at its sole discretion, what constitutes an appropriate replacement.

What is not covered under this guarantee?

This guarantee does not apply to products that have been stored or installed incorrectly, used inappropriately, abused, misused, altered, or cleaned using the wrong cleaning methods or cleaning products. This guarantee does not cover normal wear and tear, cuts or scratches, stains or damage caused by impacts or accidents. This guarantee does not apply if the product has been placed outdoors or in a humid environment. This guarantee does not cover consequential or incidental damage.

Our mattresses are put to the test To test strength and durability we use a machine that simulates the movements of a person weighing 140 kg rolling around in bed 50,000 times. A pressure gauge measures the effect on springs, frames, slats and fillings. The construction must hold up to the highest requirements.

IKEA mattress Care instructions

Complement the mattress with a mattress protector or a mattress pad. It makes it more hygienic, as it is easy to remove and clean. Some IKEA mattresses and pads have a washable cover. Read the tag inside the cover for more information. Make sure that the zipper is closed when washing the mattress cover. Vacuuming the mattress helps to remove dust and mites. Use upholstery cleaner to remove stains.

If your mattress is turnable (making the head end the foot end and vice versa) you should turn it about every three months.

Turning a mattress ensures more even wear and helps to prolong its comfort.

Don’t fold the mattress. It can damage the springs and materials © Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2021 inside. Even the best mattresses become less comfortable with age, and all mattresses accumulate dust and mites over the years so we recommend that you change your mattress every 8–10 years.

Things to bear in mind with the IKEA mattress guarantee

There are a few things you need to be mindful of:

  • IKEA will inspect the mattress for faults themselves – rather than a 3rd party like Homeserve
  • It’s up to IKEA’s sole discretion if they find your mattress to be faulty or within tolerance (so you may need to get a 3rd party inspection as well in case of any discrepancies)
  • Normal wear and tear is not covered

How to claim if your IKEA mattress is faulty

First, you should contact the store where you bought the IKEA mattress and speak to their returns department by calling IKEA’s phone number 0203 645 0000.

List the fault you believe has developed in the mattress to IKEA staff:

  • Be clear about what is wrong with the mattress
  • Try to be objective – saying it’s not comfortable any more is subjective – state if you think it has dipped or sagged beyond reasonable levels.
  • Take photos on your phone if you believe there is a visible fault, like a failed spring or sides bulging.
  • In the case of mattress settlement – use a long ruler across the top of the mattress, ensuring it reaches both sides to show any settlement in between (the industry standard is 2 inches or more of permanent settlement)
Summary

It’s important when buying any mattress you clearly understand the returns and guarantee process. This article helps summarise what to do if you need to return your IKEA mattress under their 90-day exchange policy. It’s worthwhile factoring in the guarantee or return details when choosing a mattress because what may look like a bargain deal of a bed can turn into a waste of hard-earned cash if its not suitable and you can’t return it.
