Our pocket-sprung mattresses offer incredible levels of support and comfort. Regardless of mattress sizes or comfort levels, our products are engineered to encourage the perfect night’s sleep.
Pocket-sprung mattresses are constructed using individual pocket springs, which respond to different types of pressure. These springs adapt and contour to your body shape, providing an experience that’s tailored to your comfort levels. Our pocket-sprung mattresses are suitable for all kinds of sleepers. Whether you’re a heavy or light sleeper, a side or back sleeper, or sleep in the starfish or soldier position, our mattresses will provide a night of restful sleep.
Benefits of Pocket Sprung Mattress
Pocket-sprung mattresses come with numerous benefits:
- Pocket springs prevent movement/transference between sleepers.
- They provide a more consistent firmness across the entirety of the mattress.
- Pocket spring beds are breathable and prevent heat build-up, meaning you won’t overheat on those hot summer nights.
- They offer greater support by contouring more closely to your body than cage-sprung or open-coil mattresses.
- Our pocket springs are encased in breathable calico fabric and are vanadium-plated to prevent rust.
- They allow for tailored tensions to suit individual body weights.
- They are ideal for sharing a bed, especially if partners toss and turn or have different weights, as they minimise movement.
- Each spring independently supports the body, reducing “roll-together” and movement transfer.
Tensions of Pocket-Sprung Mattresses
Pocket springs are available in three main tensions:
- Soft (1.2 gauge).
- Medium (1.4 gauge).
- Firm (1.6 gauge).
The appropriate tension for you depends on your body weight rather than your preference for softness or firmness. Contrary to some beliefs, the tension of a mattress is not always determined solely by the number of pocket springs. For example, two mattresses with 2000 pocket springs may feel very different, with one being soft and the other rather firm.
Other factors influencing firmness include the type of fillings, base type (such as slats or platform tops), wire thickness, and the number of turns in each spring. The tension or “gauge” of the springs is a key contributor to firmness, demonstrating that it’s not just about the number of springs.
Standard Spring Vs Pocket-Sprung Mattresses
One of the main differences between standard (or open coil) mattresses and pocket-sprung mattresses is that standard spring coils move together as one unit, whereas pocket springs move independently.
Pocket-sprung mattresses are made using springs that are encased within individual fabric pockets, providing an extremely responsive sleeping surface (especially when compared to standard open-coil springs). A pocket-spring mattress is crafted for both comfort and support, ensuring stability even if you share a bed or move around during the night. With its design, it helps to provide undisturbed, restful sleep, contributing to a healthier, happier day ahead.
How Many Springs Should You Get?
When it comes to spring count, there is no universal answer. Just because your mattress has more pocket springs, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better! Some mattresses utilise micro-springs to inflate their spring count, but you really don’t get many benefits from having thousands of springs for the sake of it. For a king-size, 1000 to 1500 springs is optimal, with around 1300 being ideal for a double. A single layer can hold up to 2000 springs, while the minimum for any mattress is 600. Spring counts of over 2000 usually indicate multiple layers of springs.
Pocket-Spring Mattresses for Bad Backs
A pocket-sprung mattress can improve sleep for those with back issues, as each spring works independently to provide superior spinal support. However, other factors like mattress firmness, comfort layers, and optimal sleeping positions for lower back pain should also be considered. An orthopaedic mattress, designed to reduce stress on the back, neck, and joints, may also be beneficial.
