Will polyester be too hot and the best mattress for hypermobility

Katie asked
30th January 2017

I hope you can help – currently I am paralysed with all the choices out there! I’m currently on my 3rd memory foam mattress (this time a Leesa). Every time I fall for the promise that THIS mattress uses a new technology that won’t make us too hot (the last one. But surprise, surprise, it’s too hot. So it’s time to go back to pocket sprung.
The problem is, I have hypermobility (which basically means my ligaments allow my joins to move too much, causing me pain). memory foam is so much comfier for me thanks to the support it gives. I don’t have the budget for latex (and from what I’ve read I’m not convinced it’s much cooler anyway – plus it sounds like it will be too firm).
So here are my questions:
1. What is the right tension for me? My husband is a side sleeper, weighs between 11-12st, 5ft9. I’m 8.5st (sorry no scales!) and 5ft3. I want a softer bed for my back, but I’m worried it’ll end up with us rolling into the middle like those beds Grannies have in their spare rooms.
2. Will the polyester in the Origins 1000 make us too hot? My budget is limited (ideally under £600) so I’m thinking of buying the cheaper one (since you mention it’s softer) and then getting a wool or thick cotton topper.
3. Is the polyester recyclable or is it all going to sit on landfill once we’re done? Usually I’d go for the hippy coir option on the Natural John Lewis range, but having spent time on your site, I would rather give you my money.
Any advice welcome!

Hi Katie,

Thank you for your enquiry.

We do not make nor recommend memory foam mattresses for the reason detailed in this article. With your particular body weights, we would suggest a split spring tension, soft for you and medium for your husband with such mattresses are only available in our Artisan range although we note that this outside you budget.

You refer to the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium spring unit together with softer man made upholstery layers, ideal for side sleepers such as your husband and is unlikely to make you feel hot. Although this does have a medium spring, the softer upholstery layers will provide you with that softer feel you require. This mattress is within your budget at £525.00 for a King Size model.

Origins Comfort 1000

Your bodyweightThis will feel
Under 10 Stone / 63kgMedium
10-12 Stone / 63-76kgMedium
12-14 Stone / 76-88kgSoft to Medium
14-16 Stone / 88-101kgSoft
16-18 Stone / 101-114kgNot suitable
18 Stone / 114kg PlusNot suitable

We would not advise you to purchase a topper at the same time as your mattress, as it can take around 21-28 days for your body to get used to the feel of a new mattress and if you buy at the outset, it could turn out to be an unnecessary expense.

We are aware that polyester can be recycled, however, this would really depend upon where you disposed of it and you may need to research an ethical method of disposal. There are some companies who will recycle the components from mattresses, including the upholstery and these can be located via the internet.

We hope the above is of help to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Sleep well
